As we close out the month today, CVAC has been on 85 calls so far in May. That’s a new record for us for most calls in May. Our members logged 2,150 hours on duty this month and thirty-one different members responded on at least one call. Amazingly, our top responder in May went on 48 calls. Year to date, CVAC has had nearly 24% more calls this year as compared with last year, a remarkable increase.

With EMS Week having just ended, we're reflecting on the people who make this work possible. Behind every response is a crew of CVAC volunteers, they are the backbone of our corps. We're grateful for the support of our local colleagues: the New Castle Police Department, Westchester County Police, Chappaqua Fire Department, Millwood Fire Company, and Westchester EMS. Last Sunday, we were proud to celebrate 90 years of service to our Chappaqua and Millwood communities at our CVAC Community Party. Thank you to everyone that came out to celebrate with us!

Twenty-six calls this past week for CVAC and its all-volunteer members. Our calls included the following:
• Several patients injured in six separate motor vehicle crashes
• Patient (actually two) who gave birth at home
• Patient with low blood pressure
• Cyclist who was struck by a car

This past week, CVAC responded to six motor vehicle crashes in our community. Thankfully, our volunteers were ready to provide emergency medical care when help was needed most — but these incidents are an important reminder of how quickly a normal drive can turn into an emergency. Many crashes are preventable. Distracted driving, speeding, following too closely, fatigue, and impaired driving continue to be leading causes of serious accidents. Even a momentary distraction — checking a text, adjusting navigation, or looking away from the road — can have life-changing consequences. As we head into the busy summer travel season, CVAC encourages everyone to make safety a priority every time you get behind the wheel:
• Put the phone away
• Always wear your seatbelt
• Obey speed limits
• Never drive impaired or overly tired
• Leave extra distance between vehicles
• Stay alert for pedestrians, cyclists, and emergency responders
Our volunteers are proud to serve Chappaqua and Millwood 24/7, but the safest emergency call is the one that never happens. Please drive carefully and help keep our roads safe for everyone.

Today’s the day! Come out and join us for CVAC’s 90th anniversary celebration at St. Mary’s Church from 2 to 5 pm. We’d love to see you as we kick of EMS Week 2026 and recognize the dedicated volunteers and providers who answer the call — day and night — to serve our community. For 90 years, the members of Chappaqua Volunteer Ambulance Corps have been there for our neighbors during emergencies, moments of uncertainty, and times when every second matters. Whether responding to medical emergencies, motor vehicle accidents, cardiac arrests, falls, or community events, our volunteers bring compassion, professionalism, and commitment to every call. EMS Week is an opportunity to thank the EMTs, drivers, aiders, officers, and support members who make our mission possible. These individuals balance family, careers, school, and personal commitments while continuing to serve Chappaqua and Millwood with pride. We also thank our community for its ongoing support. Your encouragement, donations, and appreciation help ensure that CVAC can continue providing high-quality emergency medical care whenever it is needed. If you see a member of CVAC this week, please take a moment to say thank you.

Join CVAC on Sunday, May 17, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM for our 90th Anniversary Party on the front lawn of St. Mary’s Church. In the event of rain, the celebration will move to CVAC Headquarters at 233 North Greeley Avenue. This special afternoon is our way of saying thank you to the community that has supported us for nearly a century. Whether you’ve called 911 in an emergency, volunteered alongside us, attended one of our events, or simply waved to an ambulance passing by, you are part of the CVAC story. We’ll have ice cream, cake, games, and family-friendly fun as we celebrate nine decades of volunteer service, dedication, and community spirit. It’s a chance to reconnect with neighbors, meet some of our members, and honor the generations of volunteers who helped build CVAC into what it is today. All are welcome, and we hope you’ll join us as we celebrate 90 years of serving Chappaqua and Millwood — and look ahead to the future together!

What would happen if there were an airplane crash at White Plains Airport? Would first responders be prepared? To help ensure that we are, the FAA requires that all airports, including HPN, hold regular mock disasters. The airport, along with area first responders who would respond to a real incident, held a mass casualty incident (MCI) drill yesterday to simulate a real disaster. These drills are typically held at the airport but yesterday’s drill was meant to simulate a disaster where a plane crashed into one of the waterways surrounding HPN and it was conducted at Rye Playland. CVAC was an active participate in yesterday’s MCI drill, with 6 CVAC volunteers taking part in the exercise. One of our members was placed in charge of the overall EMS scene management and another was given the task of leading up efforts to quickly triage patients into varying degrees of injury. While we certainly hope to never have to use these skills for real, drills like the one yesterday help to get us prepared just in case.

Two dozen calls this past week for CVAC’s volunteers. Our calls included the following:

• 4 year old who fell out of bed and had laceration above eye
• 7 month old who had an allergic reaction
• Several patients injured in falls
• MVA involving car that fell onto tracks at Pleasantville Train Station (pictured)

On Thursday, CVAC was dispatched for a car that went through a fence and fell onto the tracks at the Pleasantville Train Station. Pleasantville VAC and CVAC each responded to the scene. In a serious accident, like the one shown here, the moments immediately after impact are critical. Knowing what to do can make all the difference—for you, your passengers, and others involved.
If you’re ever in a crash:
• Stay calm and assess the situation --Take a breath and quickly check yourself and others for injuries.
• Call 911 immediately -- Even if injuries aren’t obvious, emergency responders should evaluate the scene.
• Get to a safe location if possible -- If your vehicle is in a dangerous spot—like near train tracks or traffic—move away only if it’s safe to do so.
• Do NOT re-enter a damaged vehicle -- There may be hidden dangers like fire, unstable positioning, or oncoming hazards.
• Help others carefully -- Do not move injured individuals unless there is immediate danger (like fire or an oncoming train).
