We are pleased to announce that we were recently notified that our request for an Assistance for Firefighters Grant (AFG) has been accepted. This grant was a regional effort by the following fire departments:

• Atwood Hose Fire Company
• Baltic Fire Department
• Canterbury Fire Department
• Chaplin Fire Department
• Hampton Fire Department
• Scotland Fire Department

The funding awarded in this grant will be used to purchase much-needed dual-band portable radios for each department. The new radios will replace equipment that is nearly 20-years old. The technology in the new radios will allow for better communication within each department and interoperability between mutual aid agencies throughout our region.

We would like to thank Representative Joseph Courtney and Senators Blumenthal and Murphy for their support of our efforts in obtaining this grant funding.

In continuing efforts to keep our responders safe and to serve the citizens of our districts, we look forward to placing these state-of-the art radios in service in the near future.

This morning we are hosting a multi agency swift water rescue drill in the area of Diana’s Pool and the Route 198 bridge. This annual event takes advantage of the early spring time conditions of the Natchaug River to keep the skills of the area’s swift water rescue teams sharp. Please use caution in this area.

Today was graduation day for the CT Fire Academy’s 11th Advanced Skills and Concepts program. We were honored to be represented by Cadet Firefighter Alexia Bray. This week-long overnight program is for high school-aged firefighters that have previously graduated from the Introduction to the Fire Service program. Cadets are challenged to complete advanced tasks related to firefighting and technical rescue by using tools like self-contained breathing apparatus, vehicle extrication tools, and rope rescue equipment. This training supplements our in-house training and ensures that the future of the Fire Service is well-educated and prepared. Congratulations Lexi on your accomplishment and continued dedication to our community! You have made us very proud!

Chief Pinto, along with some help from a couple great friends of the fire department, fixed the tree lights and placed the traditional star atop our tree. During the tree lighting setup we discovered that over the past year the tree went through a growth spurt. It had out grown the string lights and made placing the star unsafe using our usual methods. We were unable to get everything in place before the tree lighting but with the help of Green Valley Tree and past First Selectman Bill Rose, we were able to get it looking good for the holidays. Please join us in thanking them for donating their time and equipment!

For the first time in over 22 years, the Chaplin Volunteer Fire Department has taken delivery of a brand new fire apparatus! Truck committee members spent many hours working together to ensure we got an apparatus that would serve the community well for many years. Our new Engine Tank 109 is a 2022 E-ONE built on a Spartan FC-94 chassis and holds 1,000 gallons of water. It was purchased from Greenwood Emergency Vehicles with funds supplemented by a USDA Community Facilities Grant. After a few weeks of training, ET-109 will be placed in service replacing the 1999 International/Central States, Engine Tank 309. Engine Tank 109 has been dedicated to the memory of truck committee member and Deputy Chief Bob Williamson, who passed away last year.

Our town does not have the typical fire hydrants that are a part of a pressurized water system. Instead, we rely on ponds, rivers, and streams to fill our fire apparatus. When large amounts of water are needed at an incident, we request tanker trucks that carry several thousand gallons of water. Using portable water tanks we can quickly dump water from a large opening in the tanker trucks rather than take extra time to connect a narrow hose and pump the water off.

This week, department members trained on the setup of the portable tank and the specialized equipment needed to pump the water out of that tank.

Today was graduation day for the CT Fire Academy’s 49th Introduction to the Fire Service program. This week long overnight program is for high school aged firefighters and focuses on the mission, culture and skill sets of the Fire Service. This training complements and expands on training provided in fire departments like ours. Congratulations to our very own Cadet Blake on your hard work and dedication to our community! You made us proud!
