Everyone belongs on the build site! 💙 Next Friday, September 11, we're hosting a Building Belonging volunteer shift and afternoon of service at Weavers Grove, and we could use your help spreading the word.

Building Belonging creates opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to volunteer alongside their supporters, allies, advocates, and anyone interested in building a more inclusive community.

No construction experience is needed. Volunteers of all abilities, backgrounds, and skill levels are welcome, and we'll have additional supports in place to help everyone stay safe, have fun, and make a meaningful contribution.

As we mark September 11 as a day of remembrance and reflection, we’re grateful for the opportunity to come together in service, strengthen connections, and build a community where everyone belongs.

Did you know your retirement account can be one of the most tax-efficient assets you can leave to a nonprofit? When an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) is left to an individual beneficiary, it's generally considered taxable income, meaning that beneficiary will owe income tax when they withdraw from the IRA. But nonprofits like Orange Habitat typically do not owe income tax on a traditional IRA distribution!

We heard from an anonymous member of our Framing the Future Legacy Giving Society who was motivated by the practicality of this option and felt that including Orange Habitat in her estate plans was a natural way to continue the support she's given over the course of her life.

We were honored to host incoming first-year Duke University students for a volunteer day as part of their orientation program last week!

72 students spent a (very hot!) day working at our Weavers Grove site. Over the course of the week, they also volunteered at Habitat Restores across the Triangle and helped out at ReCity Network in Durham.

What better way to start a new chapter than by getting to know your new community and helping make it stronger? Thank you to the Project Habitat cohort for joining us! And happy ! 🛠️👷

What started as an experiment with a couple of solar panels has revolutionized the way we power our construction work. ☀️🔋 Dmitry — a regular volunteer who also happens to be a brilliant scientist — has designed, sourced, and installed solar charging stations and mobile battery packs that make our work more nimble and save staff time.

This is just a little taste of his ingenuity, including sourcing parts from Habitat ReStore - Durham/Chapel Hill! Let us know if you'd be interested in learning more about this setup: Dmitry hopes to spread the word and doesn't want this system to begin and end here!

Our repairs team has begun construction of Orange Habitat’s first-ever replacement project: a brand-new house designed by Rural Studio - Auburn University that’s going up in place of a mobile home that had become unlivable.

This project is part of our Home Preservation program, which helps qualifying Orange County homeowners stay in the homes they already own by conducting critical repairs and accessibility modifications like roof replacements, wheelchair ramp additions, and HVAC repairs at low-to-no cost to them.

But it’s not unusual to encounter a home that requires more comprehensive repairs, and the expenses would add up. “We’d often find ourselves in the position where we’d put in all that money [repairing a home], and it still wouldn’t be as good as a new house” in terms of its structural soundness, safety, energy efficiency, and air quality, explained our VP of Construction, Richard Turlington.

Such was the case when Habitat staff assessed this double-wide home west of Carrboro: they found that the leaking roof had led to such extensive structural damage and mold throughout the home, it would actually be more cost-effective to build a new one than try to repair and remediate the existing house.

Rural Studio, part of Auburn University’s School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture, provided the plans for a small, bright, durable, and energy-efficient one-bedroom home. This summer, contractors demolished the old home, and our repairs team is at work on the new one. (Special shout-out to Taylor and Della, who have been a mighty team of two building this house!)

This pilot project is a way of exploring new ways to build and preserve local affordable housing options.
