Meet Trina Searcy, New Outreach Coordinator!

Family Service is excited to welcome Trina Searcy as our new Outreach Coordinator.

Trina holds a bachelor’s degree in communication and brings a wealth of experience in marketing, communications and community engagement. Trina spent much of her career working at managed care organizations, advocating for individuals with disabilities. Recently, she has worked in food insecurity, supporting efforts to address hunger and improve access to nutritious food.

"Throughout my career, I’ve been dedicated to breaking down barriers for individuals with disabilities. I am thrilled to bring that passion to this role. My focus is to empower older adults by connecting them with vital resources, helping them stay independent, and deeply connected to the community for as long as possible.”

As Outreach Coordinator, Trina will lead efforts to increase community awareness of Family Service programs and services throughout Champaign, Douglas and Piatt counties. She will also oversee the Family Service Self-Help Center of Champaign County.

Yesterday, our executive director, Nicole Dowling, was a guest on Brian Barnhart’s show on NewsTalk 1400 WDWS.

Hickory Point Bank chose Family Service to be this month’s customer to highlight on the show. Halia Daley, one of Hickory Point Bank’s commercial lending team and a United Way of Champaign County Emerging Community Leaders alumna, joined Nicole in the studio. Halia has volunteered at Family Service and has been supportive of our work in the community for some time.

Thanks first to Hickory Point Bank for supporting Family Service and being so easy to work with. Halia and the rest of your staff makes it easier for us to tend the needs of our older neighbors.

Thanks, too, to Brian Barnhart for inviting Nicole on. It’s always a pleasure to get to talk about all the ways we can honor and dignify the seniors we serve. We’re grateful for the chance to let the community know what we’re up to …

… and that we are actively looking for volunteers. Family Service has a great group of volunteers who are the oil in the engine of our organization.

Volunteer roles include light office work to Meals on Wheels deliveries and everything in between. Please, even if you only have an hour or two a month to spare, check us out!

Call us at 217.352.0099 and ask about volunteer opportunities. We’d love to connect with you.

Financial scams are sharply on the rise. According to an FBI news post published this past May, the 2025 losses experienced by seniors due to scams reached almost $8 billion, with an average reported loss coming in at a shocking $38,000 PER VICTIM.

Sadly, most victims were not aware that scams were so prevalent, so they didn't know which warning signs to watch for.

It's often one link that should not have been clicked. It can happen in a flash, and then it's very difficult to walk it back once the scammers have gotten into your personal information.

One of Family Service's core values is autonomy and agency, meaning that we want seniors to be empowered to steer their own ships, make their own decisions, and keep pursuing happiness as they see fit.

Scams get in the way of your right to live as you wish, so we have invited the Champaign County Sheriff's Office to do a presentation on Senior Safety that will include detailed information on how to avoid being scammed.

We can't box up all the fraudsters and send them away, but we can arm our older neighbors with the facts and strategies they need to keep themselves safe.

Please join us on Thursday, September 10 at 10:30 am.

None of us can afford to be in the dark when it comes to fraud and scams. We hope all our senior neighbors will give themselves the gift of empowerment and knowledge to avoid a catastrophic, expensive scam mistake.

Please share this post. We are hoping for a packed house full of older adults that want to be proactive about their own safety, especially when it comes to their finances.
