Naila and the Uprising chronicles the remarkable journey of Naila Ayesh and a fierce community of women at the front lines, whose stories weave through the most vibrant mobilization in Palestinian history - the First Intifada in the late 1980s. In the first ever large-scale boycott of Israeli products, Palestinian women organized backyard gardens, farming cooperatives and taught women to grow their own food. The intifada became more than a political revolution, but a social feminist revolution. This film brings out of anonymity the courageous women activists who have remained on the margins of history.

Greetings, Canopy Club management—

It’s come to the attention of quite a few concerned people in Champaign-Urbana that your venue is hosting Israeli military propaganda operative Ishay Ribo on its stage. The event is being advertised to the University of Illinois campus community as a night of Jewish pride and heritage, conflating the faith and culture of Judaism with the brutal genocide and apartheid perpetrated by the colonizing forces occupying Palestine.

Let’s be clear: The millennia-long Jewish faith and cultural tradition is NOT THE SAME as the 80-year-old militarized colonial state of Israel. Ishay Ribo’s mission is to normalize these ongoing atrocities among Jewish-American young people and to associate and conflate Jewish pride with support for Israeli war crimes and crimes against humanity. Providing a platform to a propaganda operative for a genocidal and criminal ethnostate is a dangerous betrayal of human values. People of conscience who advance social justice absolutely oppose any celebration of monstrous dehumanization, dispossession, displacement, and outright slaughter of indigenous peoples, including the people of Palestine, and we will speak out about it.

For the Canopy Club, there’s still time to change course and do the right thing. Pull the plug on this upcoming concert. Denounce Ishay Ribo. Stand with people of principle against the decades-long series of atrocities and against the ongoing ethnic cleansing of the people of Palestine.

Never again means now.

The film follows Noam Shuster Eliassi, who was raised in a bilingual Israeli-Palestinian village. As she grows disillusioned with traditional peace activism, she pivots to stand up and quickly attracts attention across the Middle East. But as her star rises, everything around her falls apart. With biting satire, Noam pushes her audiences to fave difficult truths that aren't always funny but do remind us that another reality is possible.

According to Tu B'Shvat, this is the point in our calendar when the trees renew their year and just barely begin to shift away from a full frozen inactivity towards spring. As we meet this moment of brutal ICE violence by going to vigils, protests, trainings, and more - we call on an important legacy of ritualized community action. So many of our Jewish rituals have been lost or warped by the violence of Israel, and every year we must wrestle with how to reclaim them. Our focus is from the perspective of Jews in solidarity with our Palestinian neighbors, and yet this work of decolonization is mirrored all across the world - all are welcome to join us.
