Champaign Police have free steering wheel locks available to Kia and Hyundai owners! These locks are available on a first come, first served basis at our front desk at 82 E. University Avenue in Champaign. Any affected Kia or Hyundai owner is welcome to claim a lock, regardless of where they live.

Area residents need to provide proof of ownership of a Kia vehicle manufactured from 2011 to 2021 or a Hyundai vehicle manufactured between 2013 and 2021 to qualify for a free steering wheel lock.

To combat vehicle thefts related to a social media trend, Champaign Police is offering free steering wheel locks to Kia and Hyundai owners!

Two Champaign teens are in custody for their alleged roles in a Monday night, June 15, shooting that killed a 16-year-old and injured a 17-year-old. On June 18, 2026, a 16-year-old and a 14-year-old were arrested during the ex*****on of a court-authorized search warrant in the 1600 block of Cruising Lane. Additionally, two other search warrants were executed in connection with this investigation during the same evening. The two subjects now face multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated battery with a firearm. Because the suspects are juveniles, state law prohibits the release of additional identifying information.

Be storm safe, but don't flood 9-1-1! Know who to call with downed lines and tree debris!

⚠️ SEVERE WEATHER SAFETY REMINDER ⚠️

As cleanup continues following recent storms, METCAD 9-1-1 asks residents to help keep emergency lines available for true emergencies.

📞 CALL 9-1-1 ONLY IF:
✅ A power line is arcing, sparking, or actively causing a hazard.
✅ A downed tree or power line has struck a home or other structure.
✅ There is an immediate threat to life or safety.

🚫 DO NOT CALL 9-1-1 FOR:
❌ Downed trees that are not creating an emergency hazard.
❌ Power outages.
❌ Downed power lines that are not arcing and have not impacted a structure.
❌ Tree debris in roadways or yards.

⚡ To report power outages or downed power lines, contact Ameren at 1-800-755-5000.

🌪 WHEN OUTDOOR WARNING SIRENS SOUND:
• Go indoors immediately.
• Seek shelter in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor.
• Stay away from windows.
• Monitor local media, weather apps, or NOAA Weather Radio for additional information.

🛑 Remember: Outdoor warning sirens are designed to alert people who are OUTDOORS. They are not intended to be heard inside every home or building.

🏠 Be prepared before severe weather strikes:
• Know where you will take shelter.
• Have multiple ways to receive weather warnings.
• Create a family emergency plan.
• Keep an emergency kit with essential supplies.

Champaign Police were dispatched to the intersection of N. McKinley Avenue and Paula Drive at 9:31 p.m. on June 15, 2026, following a report of a shooting with injuries in the area. Arriving on-scene, officers quickly located two victims with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. With assistance from the Champaign Fire Department, officers immediately began to administer emergency medical aid. They were transported to an area hospital in critical condition, where one later passed away.

While the initial investigation is still underway, information on the circumstances of the incident is still being collected. Champaign Police remained in the area for several hours, and continue to seek potential witnesses, physical evidence, and video that could be of value to the investigation. Champaign Police were dispatched to an area hospital at 1:47 a.m., after a 19-year-old male victim with a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound to the torso arrived by personal transport. The man was immediately taken to surgery, where he remains in critical condition.

The initial investigation indicates that the man was a passenger in a vehicle traveling in the 1600 block of North Mattis Avenue when the vehicle was fired upon by an unknown person or persons. Champaign Police ask that anyone who has additional information please call 217-351-4545. Arrangements can be made for information to be shared privately. Even as the storm closed the City Building today, the Champaign Police Department at 82 E. University Avenue (at First & University) remains open and we're here to assist. With temperatures reaching the 80s again today, anyone seeking a cooling shelter is welcome to come in and cool off.

The City Building will be closed on Friday, June 12, 2026, due to a power outage caused by recent storms. We anticipate the building reopening to the public on Monday, June 15, 2026.
