When we talk about food insecurity, we realize lots of folks are not clear that means. We have neighbors who face food access challenges every day. Perhaps there is some insight into what that looks like for those neighbors.

Food insecurity in our community often looks like families struggling to afford nutritious meals, individuals skipping meals to make ends meet, and children relying heavily on school meal programs for their daily nutrition. It might also mean local food pantries and soup kitchens are experiencing increased demand, stretching their resources thin.
During Hunger Action Month, various initiatives are undertaken to address these challenges. Local organizations come to raise awareness and support through food drives, fundraising events, and volunteer opportunities. Educational workshops are conducted to inform the community about the scope of food insecurity and to promote sustainable solutions. Through these efforts, we aim to not only provide immediate relief to those in need but also work towards long-term strategies that create a more equitable food system for everyone.

September is Feeding America ’s Hunger Action Month (and Good Neighbor Day is on the 28th!) , and it’s got us thinking about the responsibility we all have in the landscape of food security in our community. “Play Your Part”, Feeding America’s Hunger Action Month campaign asks. In other words, remember that we are each critical to our community, to its nourishment and its flourishing. Things are hard for many of us right now, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that the balm for times like these is connection, shared responsibility, belonging, and conversation. These days, we’re paying particular attention to ways Healthy Champaign County can facilitate our greater community being good neighbors to one another.
