On June 6, 1944, more than 150,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy, France, in the greatest amphibious landing in history. D-Day marked the critical turning point of World War II, opening the Western Front and beginning the liberation of Europe.

But an operation of this scale required an unimaginable mountain of logistics—and right here in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Letterkenny Ordnance Depot was the engine making it happen.

Known as the "Springboard of Invasion," Letterkenny moved millions of tons of supplies. Almost every bullet, mortar, and bomb that supported our troops on the beaches of Normandy passed right through our backyard.

Today, we honor the incredible bravery of the soldiers who landed on those shores, and the dedication of the local workforce who gave them the tools to win.

Yesterday, we were honored to host Lt. Gen. Gavin Lawrence, Deputy Commanding General of U.S. Army Materiel Command (AMC), for an impactful visit to Letterkenny Army Depot!

During the visit, LTG Lawrence received a comprehensive command brief and led a strategic capabilities discussion focused on how LEAD is driving modernization, readiness, and sustainment for the Joint Warfighter.

The itinerary highlighted the incredible footprint of the Organic Industrial Base (OIB), including:

LEAD Production Facilities: A firsthand tour demonstrating our advanced maintenance, manufacturing, and engineering capabilities.

Letterkenny Munitions Center (LEMC): A close look at missile and ammunition distribution, maintenance, and storage excellence.

Visits like these reinforce the vital link between AMC leadership and the dedicated workforce executing the mission on the shop floor every day. Thank you, LTG Lawrence, for your leadership and commitment to Army readiness!

At Letterkenny Army Depot, we are taking conservation to new heights.

While tracking the newly released Northern Bobwhite Quail, University of Delaware graduate researchers are also studying how native songbirds utilize the installation's restored early successional habitats.

As part of this crucial study, Gray Catbirds, Eastern Towhees, and Yellow-breasted Chats are being safely captured, measured, and fitted with trackers to monitor their movements and migration routes. This research provides valuable data on how managed lands support Pennsylvania’s Species of Greatest Conservation Need.

All banding is conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey.

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month!

For our LEAD motorcycle operators, mission readiness starts with safety. Per AR 385-10, all Soldiers and DoW civilians must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times—on or off post.

Check your gear before you ride. Remember, high-visibility or reflective outer garments are strongly encouraged to ensure other drivers see you.

Let’s keep the Letterkenny team safe this riding season!

When the Pennsylvania winters hit, most of us only notice the cold when we step outside. But inside Letterkenny Army Depot, production never skips a beat thanks to the Directorate of Public Works (DPW) Boiler Operations Team.

A huge shout-out to Ron Dean, Kent Stains, Marlin Byers, Zach Chrisemer, and Rick Wiley.

For six months of the year, this team maintains 24-hour operations to ensure our facilities stay heated. But their work goes far beyond the boiler room. During the off-hours, they are our "eyes and ears"—detecting leaks, power outages, and facility damage before the rest of the depot even arrives for work.

Because of their proactive hustle, production stays on track, and our workforce stays comfortable. Thank you for working around the clock to keep LEAD mission-ready!

For the skilled artisans, technicians, and dedicated support staff at Letterkenny Army Depot, Memorial Day carries a profound, personal significance.

Every single day, our team works behind the scenes to sustain, repair, and modernize critical defense systems. The equipment that leaves our depot floors goes directly into the hands of our nation's service members.

As we honor this solemn holiday, we pause to remember the ultimate sacrifice made by the brave men and women who never made it home. For LEAD families, this day is a powerful reminder of why our daily mission matters. The work of our hands protects the lives of those on the front lines, and we honor the fallen by maintaining an unwavering commitment to quality and readiness.

To the communities that surround our depot: as you gather this weekend, let us stand together in gratitude and remembrance.
