Reminder - flags are accepted at the Police Station for proper disposal
COTTON VS NYLON/POLYESTER US FLAGS - Lea Sheptak
So many American homes love to fly Old Glory, but a debate remains about which fabric is better – cotton, polyester, or nylon. Each fiber has its own assets and detractions, and one must consider all factors before purchasing a flag. Perhaps the most important aspect is the disposal of the flag at the end of its useful life.
The US flag is a sacred symbol that must be treated with utmost respect during its use, and the same respect is required when it is no longer suitable for service. The proper way to retire is flag is to destroy it by burning, in a dignified manner during an American Legion or Boy Scouts of America ceremony, or on one’s own. Burning polyester or nylon releases toxic chemicals into the air that burning cotton does not. And not all organizations have the capacity to process the resulting ash. These manmade fibers also take significantly longer to decompose – 30 years for nylon and up to 200 years for polyester if the flag is simply thrown away.
Cotton is the traditional choice for our flag, and it is the ideal option. Appropriate retirement ceremonies and low environmental impact are qualities in its favor, and that is the best way to honor the symbol of our great nation.

DOWNTOWN STREET RESURFACING
The repaving of streets in the commercial districts is to start Monday June 1. The streets have not been repaved since 2005, the repaving has been deferred until such time as the bridge construction was completed.
In order to minimize disruption to everyone’s daytime use of the commercial district streets and shorten the time the project will take to complete, we are undertaking the repaving at night, work hours will be from 7PM to 7AM. We believe, weather permitting, this nighttime work will allow the work to be completed in 2 weeks.
The Village recognizes this overnight work may be disruptive for residents living near the project area. Construction activity will include noise from trucks and equipment, roadway vibration, lighting, backup alarms, and increased overnight traffic throughout active work hours.
We understand this may create frustration and interrupt normal evening and overnight routines, particularly for those living immediately adjacent to the work zone. We sincerely appreciate the patience and understanding of nearby residents during this short-term project. This is necessary as these streets have not been resurfaced in 21 years and the nighttime work schedule will shorten the duration of the project by half to two thirds.
Crews will work efficiently to minimize disruption whenever possible while safely completing the project.
We all need to be patient and understanding for two weeks. This is the last planed downtown project hopefully for many years.
