In remembrance of a fallen brother in the line of duty.

Today we honor and remember Chief Garry Moore. On April 2, 2025, Chief Garry Moore died in the line of duty while responding to a call in extreme weather.

Chief Moore began serving as a volunteer public safety officer in the 1970s and began serving as Chief of the Whitewater Fire Protection District in the mid-1990s. He left behind his wife and loving family.

We will never forget the life and legacy of Chief Garry Moore.

Monday evening Chaffee Fire Department had the pleasure of assisting Chaffee VFW Post 3127 with replacing the American Flag at the cross as well as clearing the brush and trees that were blocking the view from town. We are so thankful that the VFW takes so much time and effort in keeping the area at the cross so clean and beautiful for everyone that visits our town to enjoy.

At approximately 10:04 last night Chaffee Fire department was dispatched to a single story structure fire on Elliott St. Chief officers quickly arrived to the scene and found a single story home with smoke showing from the attic and then upgraded the alarm bringing in mutual aid assistance from Scott City, Delta, Oran and Benton Fire departments. 1651 and 1652 then arrived on scene and was able to make an aggressive search into the home locating no individuals but did find seven dogs in the residence. The fire was eventually brought under control with the help of our mutual aid partners. No one was harmed at the scene but unfortunately one of the seven dogs did succumb to its injuries due to smoke inhalation. A huge thank you to everyone from North Scott Ambulance Service and Chaffee Police Department as well as several bystanders and neighbors who were able to assist with resuscitation of the animals as they were brought from the house. The house did receive substantial fire, smoke and water damage. We want to recognize everyone from Scott City, Delta, Oran, and Benton Fire departments and their critical role in supporting our local crews during emergencies by providing extra staffing to ensure community safety.

With the expected weather conditions for today and tonight, here are a few things to remember:

Today is NOT the day to be flying a kite, going for a bike ride, para sailing, burning anything AT ALL, or putting up that new gazebo you just purchased.

Secure all outdoor items that may easily blow away such as outdoor furniture, trash cans, decorations, household plants etc. Make sure all outside pets are safe and secure, bring them if possible or necessary.

Make sure all windows and garage doors are closed. Place all vehicles inside the garage if one is available.

Charge all cellphones and make sure flashlights or candles are readily available in the case of lost power.

Stay home if possible but if you need to drive remember that high winds can easily move a car. Slow your speed if necessary and keep a safe distance from other vehicles. Also if out, please be aware of flying objects and debris.

Have a safety plan in the event of severe weather. If you have a neighbor or friend with a basement, make plans to take shelter with them if needed. If no basement is available, make sure your family members have a place in your home that is safe, preferably one without windows.

Mobile home owners: mobile homes are very susceptible to turning over with high winds or storms. Seek out a sturdier place to ride out the storm if possible.

As always, look out for your neighbors and be kind to one another. In the event of any damage in our area, please stay tuned to our Chaffee Fire Department page for any needed information.

Ok Chaffee peeps, today is Thursday and they are calling for a heavy amount of winter weather including quite a hefty amount of snow as early as tomorrow. That means you have at least ONE full day to get all of the things done that you need to before you can park it on the couch for a few days and eat all of the Oreos you want while bing watching all of the movies in your Netflix queue that you haven't had time to watch until now.

"But I have 4 wheel drive". πŸ™„ Amazing idea Kevin but have you ever noticed all of the jacked up F-150's in the ditches compared to amount of front wheel drive cars?

"But tomorrow is the only day I can get my nails done". 🫒 Omg Karen, we all know you're just gonna break one the next day anyway. No one cares about your nails.

"But it's $1 margarita night down at Mexican" πŸ€ͺ Okay Stephanie, it might be good to miss a week after the way you probably acted last week anyway.

"But we love getting out to drive around town to see all of the beautiful snow". 🀣 Sounds great Tony but do you also love the idea of paying a hefty tow bill and an auto body bill 'cause that's what you're gonna get with that way of thinking. Geez. 🀦

Chaffee Fire Department and the surrounding emergency medical departments are committed to responding to any emergency, weather related or not, but please do them a huge, solid favor and stay home. Unless you have a good reason for getting out in any dangerous weather we may be getting, stay home and stay safe, don't make their jobs any harder.

A few quick tips to prepare:
Have emergency heat back-up
Have cell phones charged up
Have extra basic food essentials
Have emergency numbers of friends and family as well as neighbors, and please check on your neighbors if they are elderly- be kind 😁
Bring any pets inside if possible
Have plenty of water available in case of frozen pipes (surely by now you have disconnected any water hoses outside but if not, get it done)
Have flashlights and batteries available in case of power outages
Have dry wood indoors for any fireplaces
Have plenty of gas in your car in case you do have to leave for an emergency
Consider some salt for your sidewalk and/or porches (your local mailman will appreciate this)

Please just use common sense for the next several days. Don't get out unless you absolutely have to. Watch our page in case of any need-to-know information that is released. Please help keep our community safe and don't add to the list of "please respond to's" if you can help it. Our emergency crews would greatly appreciate that. πŸ˜€πŸŒ¨οΈ
