Wayne County Schools is aware of reports that students in West Virginia and other states have received threatening social media messages from an individual or individuals using the username "Cat in the Hat." These messages have been transmitted through social media platforms and have been reported to the West Virginia Fusion Center.

Wayne County Schools received reports that similar messages were sent to students in Wayne County including Vinson Middle, Wayne Middle School, and Wayne High School. The Wayne County Sheriff's Department, West Virginia State Police, Capital Police School Safety Officers, and Wayne Police Department are aware of these threats and continue to investigate. After reviewing available information, law enforcement has not identified evidence of a credible threat. As stated previously, similar reports have been received in multiple counties and states.

All schools will remain on a normal schedule and if there are reports impacting schools you will see an increase in law enforcement presence. Any communication that references schools, students, or staff in a threatening manner is taken seriously. Wayne County Schools will continue to work closely with law enforcement, and our School Resource Officers will closely monitor any concerns related to this activity.

We encourage families to take the following steps if they encounter these messages:

Save screenshots of messages, images, friend requests, or social media posts that reference children or schools in a threatening manner.

Report the information immediately to law enforcement, a school administrator, or a School Resource Officer.

Do not respond to, engage with, or share the posts.

Encourage your child to speak with a trusted adult if they receive or observe content that makes them feel unsafe or concerned.

Discuss with your child the difference between online hoaxes, viral pranks, and genuine threats, while emphasizing that all threatening communications should be reported.
