Chance Gardens

Chance Gardens Open all daylight hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Chance Gardens, a horticultural attraction was built in 1936 by Mr. In 1927 Mr. Chance took a world tour.

Albert Bishop Chance, is an expression of his gratitude to the community for it's support of the Chance Company through the years. He was so inspired by the gardens he saw that upon his return he built one of his own. The garden was originally designed by Mrs. Maude Dawson Taylor, landscape architect of Kansas City, Missouri. The oriental influence may be sense in the artful harmony of wood, water

, rocks, trees, shrubs, and flowers as well as in the design of entrances and garden pergola. Key features include a massive stone arch and wishing well. Chance Gardens, now listed on the National Historic Registry, is Boone County's oldest garden open to the public. It continues to attract thousands of visitors annually. Some return several times during the year to admire the changes brought by the advancing seasons. A 1995 addition, the Rose Garden, sits adjacent to the Chance Museum. From May to November the Rose Garden is ablaze with the blooms of 400+ different varieties of Hybrid Tea and Floribunda Roses. Maintenance of the garden is provided by the generosity of the Chance Foundation, created by contributions of the Chance family and the A. B. Chance Company.

The largest koi fish ever recorded was a whooping four feet long and 91 pounds!

The oldest koi fish ever was a koi named Hanako was born in 1791 and didn't die until 1977 that means she lived to be 226!

I'm going to vent a little here. Yesterday June 27th. Was the second time that I have been shocked by the behavior of "professional" photographers using the garden for a shoot. This time the shot included the throwing of Mylar confetti for the picture. Who throws confetti and walks away for somebody else to clean up?

These three "Tree peonies" are ironically open pollinated chance seedlings that volunteered in the Chance Garden. Bottom right photo is the first time it has bloomed. For the gardener it's quite exciting to see!
