September 1947 โ€” that's when Richard Halliburton's Book of Marvels became the very first book checked into the Centralia High School library, and it's still here today.

Librarian Mrs. Magnuson recently came across this piece of Panther history tucked away in our collection. The original checkout card is still inside, filled with handwritten names and dates from students who walked these same halls decades ago.

๐ŸŽ‰ Twenty-four years of Geometry, Algebra 1, and Functional Math. Thirty-seven first days of school in Centralia โ€” starting all the way back in Kindergarten. It's safe to say this community has been Elizabeth Gilman's home for a long time, and we are so grateful she chose to spend her teaching career right here with us.

Elizabeth's calling came early. Growing up, she had wonderful teachers, several aunts and uncles in education, and a natural ability to help her classmates understand math as they learned it together. Teaching wasn't just something she fell into โ€” it was a dream she carried since middle school.

What she hopes students carry with them is simple: that she wanted them to learn, and that she cared about them as people โ€” sometimes more than she cared about their math grade. For her colleagues, her advice is just as clear: do what's best for the kids in your classroom, every day.

When it comes to retirement, Elizabeth has a list of things to look forward to โ€” starting with rest, followed by a fall trip to New England to see the fall colors, and yes, cleaning out her closets. But above all, she's looking forward to reclaiming her nights and weekends to spend with the family and friends who've shared her life outside the classroom.

Elizabeth put it best herself: "After 24 years as a teacher in this district and 37 first days of school here since Kindergarten, this decision comes with deep reflection and gratitude." She counts herself fortunate to have learned from remarkable educators, worked alongside truly excellent colleagues, and guided students through proofs, polygons, and the occasional "When will we ever use this?"

Congrats on your well-earned retirement! Enjoy every day!

MATT FOUCH ANNOUNCED AS NEW CIS PRINCIPAL!

We are thrilled to introduce the next principal of Centralia Intermediate School โ€” Matt Fouch!

Matt comes to us with over 16 years of experience in public education, including time as a high school math teacher, coach, assistant principal, and most recently Activities Director at Pella Community School District in Pella, Iowa. He is a passionate educator who believes deeply in strong relationships, positive culture, and bringing out the best in every student.

Matt and his wife Amy, along with their four children Grayson (10), Adalyn (8), Evelyn (4) and Kylan (2), will be making Centralia home at the end of June โ€” and they could not be more excited to be a part of our community.

Please join us in giving the Fouch family a warm welcome. We are proud to have them as part of our Centralia R-VI family.

๐ŸŽ‰ After 13 years at Centralia High School , Julie Exendine is retiring!

Julie's path to teaching was shaped early. As a kid, she loved reading and learning and spent countless hours playing school with her two younger siblings. The amazing teachers she had throughout her childhood left a lasting impression on her, showing her firsthand the difference a great teacher can make. That spark grew into a passion for sharing language, travel, and other cultures with her own students โ€” something she's done with genuine joy for 13 years.

As she looks back, what stands out most to Julie is the impact her students had on her. "I hope they know that they each made an impact on my life as well," she shared. She hopes to be remembered as someone who challenged them, cared about them, and truly wanted to see them succeed.

To her colleagues, her message is simple but powerful: mindset matters more than anything else in this profession. She encourages fellow educators not to be afraid to make changes when something isn't working, and to be the kind of person who jumps in and tries something new โ€” even when it's a little scary.

As for what's ahead, Julie is ready to embrace every bit of it. She and her husband have several trips planned, including a visit to Mexico in the fall to experience El Dรญa de los Mu***os. They've also settled into a home on 15 acres here in the community, where she's looking forward to time in nature and making the space her own.

"I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to teach and send my daughter to Centralia Schools," she said. "I love this community and have loved teaching here."

Thank you, Mrs. Exendine โ€” for 13 years of dedication, passion, and heart. Enjoy every minute of your retirement!
