Please join us tomorrow, Wednesday, June 10, at 1:15 p.m. as we officially celebrate the opening of the new pavilion at Laura Leake Park!

This exciting addition was made possible through funding from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' OSLAD Grant Program, along with the hard work and dedication of several local contractors and City employees.

We are thrilled to see this project completed just in time for the upcoming Centralia Juneteenth festivities and look forward to seeing the community enjoy this beautiful new space for years to come.

We hope to see you there as we celebrate this important investment in our parks and our community!

The Annual Memorial Celebration Service was held today at Elmwood Cemetery. Mayor Kuder led the service. Wamac Mayor Butch Mathus and Central City Mayor Neely Reed joined along with speaker Ray Young, Pastor Steve Upchurch, and singer Rowena Patrick.

During his remarks, Veteran Ray Young reflected on both remembrance and recollection while highlighting the historic Pittinger Monument at Elmwood Cemetery. The monument honors Veterans of the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II and stands as a lasting symbol of service and sacrifice in our community.

The VFW, American Legion, Troop #260, volunteers, and community members all played an important role in making the morning a meaningful tribute to those who gave so much for our country.

In addition to the service, approximately 1,200 flags were placed earlier this week throughout the cemetery at Veterans’ gravesites by many dedicated volunteers.

CENTRALIA LAKE ALGAECIDE TREATMENT

With the warm air and water temperatures, the City of Centralia will once again be applying a commercial algaecide known as EarthTec® at Lake Centralia on Thursday May 21st to prevent growth of nuisance algal blooms and cyanobacteria (also known as “blue-green algae”) blooms.

This product is registered with USEPA as an approved algaecide and bactericide. The liquid product will be spray-applied to the water surface. The application rate is intended to yield approximately 0.1 parts per million Copper ion into the top 2 ft. of the water column. The Copper inhibits growth of nuisance algae and “blue-green algae”.

The 0.1 parts per million Copper dosage is far below the maximum 1 part per million copper dosage for this purpose. The Copper dosage is not considered to be harmful to humans or fish.

The City anticipates applying the algaecide on multiple occasions depending on water quality parameters such as pH and dissolved oxygen concentration, in addition to observing visual conditions such as presence of floating biomass potentially comprised of aquatic plant growth such as nuisance algal and “blue-green algae” blooms.

For more information, please contact the City Manager’s Office at 618-533-7623.
