As we head into a busy holiday weekend on the water, it's a great time to think about recreating responsibly. Current research suggests that the impacts of wake surfing can be reduced when it occurs in water that is at least 20 feet deep, at least 500 feet from shore, and in lakes with a large enough area to consistently maintain these distances.

Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council has developed lake-specific maps and educational resources to help boaters make informed decisions and protect our lakes, shorelines, and aquatic habitat.

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Wade Foster as the new Executive Director of the Antrim Conservation District!

Many in our community already know Wade , he's been part of the ACD team since 2021, working closely with ACD staff as the program coordinator for the CAKE Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area (CISMA).

Throughout his time with the district, Wade has built strong partnerships, led and mentored staff, and secured large, high-impact habitat restoration grants focused on invasive species management. In Antrim County, ongoing efforts to treat phragmites and HWA are due in large part to Wade's work securing funding.

Wade earned a Bachelor of Science in Natural Resource Management from Grand Valley State University, along with certificates in fire ecology and ArcGIS. His collaborative leadership style and strong grant management skills have prepared him well for this role.

As Executive Director, Wade will work with the district's dedicated staff, Board of Directors, conservation partners, and community members to advance the Antrim Conservation District's mission: to protect, conserve, and promote the informed use of Antrim County's natural resources.

Congratulations, Wade! If you'd like to contact Wade you can reach him at [email protected] or 231-533-8363 ext. 1.

Many shorelines across Antrim County are continuing to experience impacts from recent flooding and high water events. As lakefront property owners consider repairs and restoration, now is an important time to think about approaches that address erosion concerns while supporting long-term shoreline health.

Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council is offering free shoreline site visits for property owners in the Elk River Chain of Lakes watershed. These one-on-one visits provide an opportunity to discuss site-specific concerns and learn about options for shoreline stabilization, native plants, habitat improvements, and stewardship practices that help protect our lakes.

Healthy, naturally functioning shorelines play an important role in reducing erosion, protecting water quality, and providing habitat for fish and wildlife.

We're at the Torch Conservation Center today until 4 PM and Saturday from 11 AM–4 PM for our Native Plant Sale!

Looking for hardy, beautiful native grasses for your landscape or restoration project? We still have a great selection available, including:

🌾 American beach grass – excellent for erosion control and sandy soils, especially on dunes!
🌾 Purple lovegrass – a stunning ornamental grass with airy purple blooms
🌾 Sideoats grama – a drought-tolerant prairie favorite that supports wildlife
🌾 Big bluestem – a tall prairie grass known for its striking form, fall color, and wildlife value
🌾 Pennsylvania sedge – a low-growing native groundcover perfect for dry shade

Native grasses add texture, movement, and year-round interest to the landscape while supporting pollinators, birds, and other wildlife. They are also well-adapted to Michigan's climate and require minimal maintenance once established.

Plants are just $7 per quart. Check out the photos below and stop by while supplies last!

Join us Friday and Saturday 11-4 (or while supplies last) for our native plant sale with Torch Conservation Center!

That dead tree in the woods isn't just an eyesore, it's valuable wildlife habitat!

Standing dead trees, known as snags, provide nesting sites, shelter, and food for countless species. Woodpeckers excavate cavities that are later used by owls, bluebirds, chickadees, bats, squirrels, and many other animals. As snags slowly break down, they also support insects, fungi, and other organisms that form the foundation of healthy forest ecosystems.

What looks like the end of a tree’s life is often the beginning of a whole new phase of life in the forest. In many cases, snags become some of the most important habitat features on the landscape, quietly full of activity and ecological value.

Sometimes the best thing we can do for wildlife is leave a dead tree standing (when it’s safe to do so).
