Hickman County EMS provides ALS/BLS 911 response throughout Hickman County, Tenn.

Our main station is in Centerville near the hospital and our East Station is located on HWY 7 in the Lyles area.

In the month of August our department responded to 269 calls for service.

This month for us has been challenging as a department, but with that being said we have the absolute BEST TEAM and they have risen to meet the demands. There could never be enough thanks for each and every one of them.

This past week we received our remount back from Select Tech and it will be placed into service hopefully this next week once it has been state inspected. We were also given confirmation that our grant was approved which means that we have a brand new ambulance that will arrive very soon. The best news is that the new ambulance came to the county via grant money from Medicare settlements and didn't cost the county for the purchase.

Two team members attended the TASA Annual Billing Re-imbursement Conference in Gatlinburg. This conference provides information about new billing practices and changes that are upcoming. It allows us to learn about documentation trends and problems that maybe trending.

The last week of August our Director, Allen Livengood retired from our department. With his departure Jessie Woodall has been appointed as the Interim Director. We want to wish Allen well with his retirement.

We want to remind everyone to have a safe Labor Day Weekend.

It's only the 11th of August and our crews have responded to 86 calls (26 of those were ran in one weekend), had 2 training days, and attended additional meetings.
Training this month has focused on pediatric patients and mental health. Our crews are required to obtain a minimum number of hours p/year of additional training, and depending on licensure level they are required to train additionally on medication administration and airway management.
Our department last month had two instructors that attended a three day conference in Murfreesboro to renew and update their skills and knowledge.
This month on the books we still have...
~ Training with our medical director on new ventilators.
~ PALS class with instructors from AirEvac
~ Mental Health Awareness Class with our State Consultant.
~ 2 Team Members attending the annual re-imbursement conference in Gatlinburg to gain knowledge on best billing practices and changes in federal and state laws that are upcoming. This conference is essential to the filing and re-imbursement of medical ambulance transports that happen.
This month also marks the beginning of Football Season for our Hickman County Bulldogs and East Hickman Eagles, which means you can find us on the premises for home games.

Today is July 31st and Hickman County ambulances have responded to 278 calls for service. Staff completed CEUs this month and did on shift training.
Two of our full time staff and three part time staff educators attended a three day conference hosted by TEMSEA in Murfreesboro. During the conference they learned about new Mental Health initiatives that will now be apart of our curriculum and continuing education each year. They also learned new ways to engage and educate using AI. These are crucial for our staff due to constant changes in medical care and treatments that we must stay current with.

In the month of August we already have things on the books:

August 1 - we will have staff at the 2nd annual Touch A Truck Event.

We have two Pediatric classes, two mental health classes, and a ventilator class for our critical care staff.

Hopefully in the near future we will begin to post things that are important for the community when calling 9-1-1 and what is needed to provide clarification about frequent misconceptions as well as to provide knowledge about things that most just don’t know.

July has started off with a bang. As of today crews have responded to 145 9-1-1 calls, provided medical for Boom on the Duck, and attended training for CEU's. 145 calls may not seem like a significant amount to some by that's an average of 8.5 calls p/shift with 3 trucks.

Today I'll break down the average 9-1-1 call and the amount of time it takes to run that call.

You call 9-1-1 and Central Communications (who is our lifeline) takes down all the information they can in order to get us en-route to you. Depending on the set list of questions and answers provided determines who all is sent to your call. 9/10 a second dispatcher has already toned out the call and crews are preparing. This normally takes up 1-3 minutes (sometimes less, sometimes more)

Central Communications then dispatches or updates the information as we are responding. Our crews have 2 - 3 minutes from time of call to respond from station (time of response depends on time of day).

Average response time within the county is 12.5 minutes. (We are already 15 minutes from initial request for help)

Crews are trained to evaluate, make a treatment plan, treat the patient, and transport them to nearest appropriate facility for their care (not just the closest hospital, but most appropriate). Our crews are highly trained individuals who can administer life saving drugs and provide a wide range of treatments during your time with them. All crew members are able to initiate cardiac monitoring and consult with ER physicians as needed to prepare for your arrival at the ER. We operate off of standing orders from our medical director, but can call when the need arises to seek additional treatments and/or options to care for our patient.

Transports can take up to an hour before that unit can return to service. Depending on call, ER wait times, and other factors beyond our control.

Crews then must clean, restock, and write an ePCR for the call.

For every 9-1-1 call we run we are looking at a minimum of one hour just to get it done and it can be up to 3 hours p/call. A few calls run on longer and we must always be prepared for those.

Keep in mind this is just the tip of the iceberg and doesn't include all the fine details and/or factors that must be considered when the call ongoing. If you have questions please feel free to call or e-mail us.

We are zeroing in on the last few days of June and boy has it been a busy month. This month alone we have responded to 243 calls. In just the last 7 days we ran 70 of those.
We deployed new cardiac monitors and have made a few adjustments to our staff schedules.
We took a unit out of service and shipped it off for the box to be remounted onto a new chassis.
Paperwork has been signed and submitted on a grant from the State of Tennessee. If awarded we it will provide just over $300,000 for the purchase of a brand new unit and the load system that is required on all new units!
Our department currently employees 30 full-time advanced level medical providers that I would allow to provide care to any family member of mine at any moment! We have some of the best!
With that being said we are preparing to welcome some additions to our large family in the next few weeks as two of our crew will become first time fathers!!!
Next week we will begin our new fiscal year and already have two trainings in place for continuing education. We are looking forward to what the rest of this year has in store.

This has been a busy month for EMS. Especially with call volume, trainings, and staffing the Pinewood Station 7 days a week with a 12 hour truck.
This week after over a year of planning we were able to deploy new cardiac monitors to our units. We also upgraded existing equipment and in previous months added new CPR devices to each unit. We now have Cardiac monitors and CPR devices on all units including the supervisor truck! Exciting things are happening in our world and it wouldn’t have been possible without all those who have supported us!

Happy Saturday from all of us at Hickman County EMS. We would like to THANK everyone who showed us some love this week. The support of community means everything . Thank you to Ascension St Thomas Hickman, Ms Cheeves for the sweet treats, LifeFlight, AirEvac, PapaKJoes, the Barnhill Family, Holt Construction, Linata’s Catering, TriStar Horizon, and to others that I am sure I have failed to mention. The food was amazing but allowing our crews just a few minutes of time to spend fellowshipping with each other was far more.
Thank you to a community that rally’s around us, you all are amazing! I didn’t get pictures everyday, but I tried!
Not only did this week bring about great food and fellowship, but also brought about training from Stryker on our new cardiac monitors that will be deployed next week!
