National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is happening Saturday, April 25, 10am - 2pm. Take Back Day is a free even for communities nationwide to properly dispose of old and unneeded medications safely and anonymously. It's Spring, time to CLEANUP your medicine cabinet of Rx meds and drop them off this Saturday, from 10am - 2pm at the Appanoose County Sheriff's Office.

Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue. Proper disposal of unneeded drugs saves lives and protects the environment and our overall community.

..BLIZZARD CONDITIONS SUNDAY INTO MONDAY MORNING... .A significant winter storm will impact parts of the Upper Midwest this weekend, mainly from Sunday through Monday morning. Widespread snow will fall across Iowa with higher amounts of 6+ inches possible north and east. Winds will gust 55-65+ mph, resulting in significant drifting of snow and visibility reductions. Travel will become very dangerous, if not impossible at times across parts of northern and eastern Iowa. Precipitation will begin as rain on Sunday morning and transition to a wintry mix, which may produce a light glaze of ice, before transitioning fully to snow.

* WHAT...Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations
between 1 and 3 inches. Winds gusting as high as 55 to 65 mph.

* WHERE...Portions of south central, southeast, and southwest Iowa.

* WHEN...From 1 PM Sunday to 7 AM CDT Monday.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. Widespread blowing
snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous
conditions could impact the Monday morning commute. Strong winds
could cause tree damage and result in power outages.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel,
have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with
your vehicle.

ON FEBRUARY 27, 2026, THE OFFICE OF THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL RECEIVED A REQUEST PURSUANT TO IOWA CODE 100.40(1) (1995) FROM MICHAEL L. LAMB, REPRESENTING EACH FIRE DEPARTMENT HAVING ALL OR PART OF THEIR FIRE DISTRICT WITHIN APPANOOSE COUNTY, THAT THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL PROHIBIT OPEN BURNING IN APPANOOSE COUNTY. UPON INVESTIGATION THE FIRE MARSHAL FINDS THAT CONDITIONS IN APPANOOSE COUNTY ARE SUCH THAT OPEN BURNING CONSTITUTES A DANGER TO LIFE OR PROPERTY.
IT IS THEREFORE ORDERED THAT NO PERSON SHALL ENGAGE IN OPEN BURNING IN APPANOOSE COUNTY, EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 27, 2026 AT 6:30 PM EXCEPT AS SPECIFICALLY PERMITTED BY IOWA CODE 100.40(3) UNTIL SUCH TIME AS MICHAEL L. The SCAMMER informs the veteran or surviving spouse that the SCAMMER can assist in getting future benefits in order for family and beneficiaries in case of death. The SCAMMER will identify themselves as the Director of Veteran Affairs. The SCAMMER will request personal information and request copies of certain documents. This is a scam and no information should be provided or submitted to the caller. If at any time a person needs assistance with Veteran Affairs issues, they should contact the appropriate Veteran Affairs Office. * WHERE...All of central Iowa for the snow. Portions of southwest

The Centerville Police Department is accepting applications for the position of Communication Specialist (Dispatcher). Applications are available at the Law Center, 22158 Dewey Road, Centerville, IA 52544 and the position will remain open until filled. Applicants will be required to complete a written exam, oral board interview, background check, psychological exam and medical physical prior to being hired. No experience as a Dispatcher is required and all training will be provided. The City of Centerville is an equal opportunity employer.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Each of the following tasks, duties, responsibilities are performed on an on-going basis unless otherwise noted.
Receives telephone inquiries and requests for service;
Dispatches police and fire units in response to emergency and non-emergency complaints and calls for service;
Transfers 9-1-1 emergency calls to appropriate agencies;
Monitors radio frequencies;
Receives, interprets, and disseminates all calls in order of priority;
Maintains records of officer status;
Documents all calls for service;
Notifies the on duty patrol supervisor of unusual incidents or major police matters as prescribed in applicable General Order;
Notifies other agencies or city departments of requests for service or of emergency situations;
Monitors alarm systems;
Conducts records checks;
Performs warrant, stolen article, and missing person entries and cancellations in the central records system and the criminal justice information systems as required;
Activates and operates the Disaster Warning system;
Operates the Hearing Impaired telephone;
Performs secondary reviews of all criminal justice information system entries made by the prior on duty Communications Specialist;
May train new Communications Specialists;
Operates teletype and automated data communications systems; and
Perform the daily required functions as required;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Possess a clear and concise speaking voice;
Ability to operate telecommunications equipment;
Ability to make effective decisions in highly stressful situations;
Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative;
Ability to learn and maintain knowledge of the geography of the Department’s service area;
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
Knowledge of the general principles of computer system operation;
Ability to accurately and rapidly enter computer data;
Ability to greet the public courteously to obtain information, give information, or to make understandable explanations of regulations;
Ability to prioritize activities and/or assignments;
Knowledge of criminal justice information systems (NCIC, NLETS, etc) rules, regulations, and requirements;
Knowledge of Departmental policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and General Orders; and
Knowledge of FCC radio transmission rules and regulations.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
Be at least eighteen years of age;
Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency
Pass a physical examination;
Be selected for appointment by the Chief of Police;
Successfully complete a six month probationary period;
Attend the Iowa Telecommunicator Academy within one year of employment; and
Receive state “IOWA/NCIC SYSTEM” certification within 180 days of initial employment.
