A cancer risk people may not associate with smoking

🚭 Smoking and lung cancer are commonly connected. But what about bladder cancer?

Cigarette smoking is a major risk factor for bladder cancer.

Why? Chemicals from cigarette smoke enter the bloodstream. As the kidneys filter the blood, some of those harmful chemicals end up in urine, where they can come into contact with the bladder.

That's an important reminder that the health effects of commercial to***co aren't limited to the lungs.

🔎 More information on bladder cancer risk factors is available from the National Cancer Institute:

🥗🪶 Healthy eating doesn't have to mean leaving culture behind.

Indian Health Service's My Native Plate is a simple visual guide for building balanced meals. It recommends filling half your plate with vegetables, using the other half for a grain/starch and protein, and adding a side of fruit.

The resource includes foods familiar to Native communities, such as berries, squash, wild rice, wild game, bison, and wild greens, while also encouraging water and staying active.

Healthy eating can support diabetes prevention and management while still making room for foods connected to our cultures, families, and communities. ❤️

💨 Va**ng isn't harmless to your lungs.

E-ci******es and v**es create an aerosol that users inhale into their lungs. While researchers are still studying their long-term effects, evidence continues to show risks to lung health.

The American Lung Association notes that e-cigarette aerosol can expose users to ni****ne and other chemicals, and inhaling harmful chemicals can contribute to lung damage and disease.

🚭 Whether it's ci******es, v**es, or other commercial ni****ne products, understanding what you're putting into your body matters.

🫁🚭 Smoking can cause lasting damage to your lungs.

COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a chronic lung disease that makes it harder to breathe. Cigarette smoking is a leading cause of COPD, but secondhand smoke, workplace exposures, genetics, and other factors can also increase risk.

For people living with COPD who smoke or v**e, quitting to***co is one of the most important steps they can take for their health. Quitting can help improve breathing symptoms and lung function and slow the progression of COPD. ❤️

🤰🚭 Smoking during pregnancy can affect both the pregnant person and the developing baby.

According to the CDC, smoking during pregnancy can increase the risk of pregnancy complications, premature birth, low birth weight, and damage to a baby's developing lungs and brain. Secondhand smoke exposure can also be harmful during pregnancy and after birth.

The good news is that quitting at any time during pregnancy can provide health benefits and give babies a healthier start. ❤️
