Salt is such an important mineral, especially in pregnancy. And in most cases, there isn’t a need to restrict intake as was previously the standard. Sodium is important not only for reducing the risk of preeclampsia, but also for prevention of postpartum hemorrhage and management of POTS.
Reposted • .off.grid 🧂 I am forever talking about the importance of salt with my clients.
🧂 And it’s mostly because there is a very popular and inaccurate assumption that increased sodium causes preeclampsia symptoms such as high blood pressure and swelling.
🧂 When actually the opposite is true.
🧂 It’s actually the lack of sufficient salt intake that is one of the causes of preeclampsia.
🧂 We need salt. Especially while pregnant.
🧂 And in addition to staving off preeclampsia, adequate salt intake is also essential for blood expansion and prevention of postpartum hemorrhage! 🩸
🧂 Just two weeks of sodium restriction can lead to a decrease in blood volume. This is when swelling starts to occur. As blood volume becomes more and more reduced, the kidneys will release a hormone that causes the arterioles to constrict which raises the blood pressure. This is what the body does when it’s experiencing a hemorrhage! 🩸
🚨 Restricting salt during pregnancy is extremely dangerous.🚨
🧂You cannot actually have too much salt, when you have more salt in your body than your body needs at that time, you will simply excrete it through your sweat. 😅
🧂 Make sure you’re getting plenty of quality natural salt like sea salt, Himalayan pink salt, or Celtic salt!
