Howdy, pardner! Next Wednesday join us in the Council Chambers Building for an afternoon with Ramblin' Rita! Join cowgirl storyteller, Ramblin’ Rita, for some totally Tall Tales! This cowgirl has traveled through mountains and deserts, forests and fields, and boy howdy, has she picked up some terrific tales along the way.

Her stories are perfect for kids of all ages. Even better than that, she brings brave buckaroos up from the audience to help her act out her wild west stories! So, dust off your ten-gallon hat and saddle up for storytelling fun as big as Texas!

Our read for August is "When the Waters Take Us," by Beth Willstrop.
One kidney-three people must have it.

Are some gifts so great they become a burden? Tyranny? Retired high school teacher CiCi Clawson-Dawson's one kidney filters lives forged together by chance and shredded by circumstance, leading to fraud, kidnapping, and murder.

CiCi wants to donate her kidney to save her best friend and housemate but battles her own doubts. Eva Davenport, who had worked in the illegal kidney market, wants to perform charitable deeds across the globe to amend her past but can't fix her own crisis. We have come to our last literacy tip for the month: Science time!
Conducting small science experiments at home builds literacy skills by connecting hands-on observations with reading, writing, and vocabulary development. Following directions, precise or imprecise measurements, and finding language to talk about what happened are important for development. For some kids, learning about water surface tension - something that is unseen but definitely there - is the first step to more and more curiosity and questions.

Today's Literacy tip: ask your child to build the ice cream sundae of their dreams. This literacy skill is all about using the words you have to imagine something grand! Describing your dream ice cream can make use of sensory words (how big is the ice cream? What flavor? What kind of toppings? Are the toppings also real, or something extra, such as “a sprinkle that makes you fly!”) descriptive language, and creative sentence structure. Giving children the space to imagine purely for enjoyment with no pressure, and no wrong answers.

Literacy Tip: How many words can you and your kiddo think of that rhymes with 'dog?'
Children love creating silly rhymes, and repeating ones learned. Rhyming can help children recognize word patterns, and create a basic skill called phonological awareness. Without even realizing it, children are training their ears to pick up on sounds and reproduce them when they engage in rhyme activities. A great place to start is animals and foods! “Dog” and “cat” have many, many words that rhyme, while food is something always around, and creating a rhyming game can be easy while having a meal.

Drawing is often a child’s first introduction to the power and connections that symbols carry. For many kids, writing can sometimes be overwhelming; drawing can be relaxing, and even natural - think back to cave drawings!
If your child has a favorite book they like to read over and over, have them draw a scene from that story, and see how they interpret it.
If they are too young to draw their own, sit with them and have them describe you a scene to draw.
It can also help them comprehend new words when you can draw them. “Gigantic” can be somewhat abstract - but if you draw a gigantic tree next to a little apple, they can understand better.
