Les Cheneaux Community Library, a Superior District Library

Les Cheneaux Community Library, a Superior District Library About Les Cheneaux Community Library (LCCL), a Superior District Library. LCCL is a member of Superior District Library. Your library staff welcomes you.

The Les Cheneaux Library was built in 2003 through the work of a committed group of volunteers and the generosity of many in our region. Our beautiful library is a true reflection of the unique character of the Les Cheneaux area. The log cabin structure features a quiet reading room with a fireplace, computer lab, wireless internet, wrap-around porch, comfortable furnishings, murals and stained glass by local artisans, and a meeting room with a large screen for media presentations. Funding from a small millage, penal fines, and donations cover the day-to-day costs of running the library, including staff salaries, internet, interlibrary loans, books, and other materials. Friends of LCCL provide maintenance of building and grounds, including utilities, insurance, cleaning, landscaping, snow removal, and trash removal. The library has over 2,500 members and houses a collection of over 19,000 titles. In 2013, patrons accessed our wireless network over 6,000 times and over 13,000 items were checked out. Donations comprise a portion of our budget and the Friends of LCCL's budget. The generosity of our patrons is greatly appreciated. We know you will enjoy the time you spend at the Les Cheneaux Community Library. Jane French, Branch Manager

LIFELONG LEARNERS, GREAT COURSE, Tuesday, September 29, 2026 at 10:30am library

We are happy to announce the current venture into knowledge.

Online Course: Native Peoples of North America from The Great Courses ...

Join the Smithsonian and an award-winning professor to recount an epic story of resistance and accommodation, persistence and adaption, and extraordinary hardship and survival.

The lessons for Tuesday, the 29th of September will be:

20: Making a New Deal in Native America

Uncover some of the hidden histories of the period between the late 1920s and early 1940s as you learn how Native Americans set about making a New Deal for themselves and their communities during an era of uncertainty and convulsive change for the nation at large. You'll also get an introduction to the Indian New Deal, which helped open the door to greater self-government, economic development.

33 min

21: American Indians and World War II

Move from World War I and the turbulent 30s to World War II to learn how the war and onset of the atomic age transformed the lives of Native Americans. While the challenges and opportunities faced by Native Americans paralleled the ones faced by many other Americans, you'll learn how the outcomes proved to be vastly different. And you'll discover Native American heroes of the War, often uncelebrated.

The last 2 lessons of this course will be ending on October 6th. Discussion and selection for our next course is a priority. Please come with ideas.

Also, Hessel School House currently has a special exhibit on the history of Native American Boarding Schools.

On Tuesday we will be deciding on a day that we could go to lunch and do a tour of the exhibit.

We will post the particulars in an email after Tuesday’s please join us.
