Polk County EMA partners work diligently to prevent and respond to natural and man-made disasters or emergencies. The mission of the Polk County Emergency Management Agency is to protect our communities by coordinating and integrating all activities necessary to build, sustain, and improve the capability to mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from threatened or actual natural disasters, acts of terrorism, or other man-made disasters.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed Polk County under a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe storms today, with storms expected to develop between 1–3 PM and continue through the evening. These storms may produce damaging wind gusts, microbursts, and hail, with the greatest concern being wind damage that could bring down trees and power lines. At the same time, dangerous heat continues across the area, with a Heat Advisory in effect through 8 PM today and again Thursday from 12–8 PM, along with an Excessive Heat Watch for portions of NW Georgia, including Polk County, where heat index values could exceed 110°F tomorrow. Hazardous heat is expected to persist into the weekend. Residents should stay weather aware, limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated, and be prepared to seek shelter quickly if storms approach.

Polk County has been placed in a heat advisory until 8:00 P.M. tonight. Heat indexes around 105-109°F can be expected today. Ensure you take proper precautions to prevent heat related illnesses. This includes staying hydrated, limiting strenuous outdoor activities, wear light-weight and light-colored clothing, and use A/C if you have it. Also be sure to check on your elderly and sick neighbors.

Polk County has been placed under a Level 2 Slight Risk of Severe Weather and Flash Flooding. Scattered showers and storms will be around during the afternoon, but the main threat will be with a potential line of strong to severe storms moving into the area during the evening and early overnight hours. The primary hazard with this line would be damaging wind gusts, though a brief tornado is also possible. Localized flash flooding could become a concern due to high rainfall rates.

Rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are expected with isolated higher amounts possible, and there is also a low risk for severe weather Thursday including gusty winds and brief tornadoes if storms develop ahead of the system. The National Hurricane Center has began issuing advisories for Potential Tropical Cyclone #1 at 11 AM this morning. Confidence is increasing that a tropical system will develop off the Texas Coast. The primary concern for Polk County is the potential for excessive rainfall over the next few days. In addition, widespread thunderstorms (a few strong to severe) may impact our area Thursday and Friday. Stay tuned over the next few days as this develops.

May 6, 2026 - From the National Weather Service "A Flood Watch is in effect for much of north Georgia 4 PM Weds - 8 AM Thurs. Widespread 1-2" rainfall totals are expected, but locally higher totals 3-5+" are possible where thunderstorms repeatedly train across the same location. Despite the ongoing drought, heavy rainfall of that caliber over a short period of time would lead to flash flooding concerns.
The potential for severe thunderstorms capable of both damaging winds and a few tornadoes will increase beginning Wednesday afternoon and persisting into Wednesday night. A Slight Risk (level 2/5) for severe weather encompasses much of north Georgia during this time. The risk for a strong tornado cannot be ruled out. April 27, 2026 - From the National Weather Service - "Several rounds of thunderstorms will be possible across multiple days this week as storms push into the area from the northwest. A few of these storms may be severe, though higher than normal uncertainty exists around the overall coverage and strength of severe weather on any given day. The primary timeframes we are monitoring are early Tuesday morning, early Wednesday morning, and Wednesday evening. North Georgia, and especially Northwest Georgia, will have the greatest chances of seeing storms at these times, with uncertainty increasing with southward extent. Possible impacts are up to 60mph winds, hail up to one inch, and a brief tornado cannot be ruled out".
