The mandatory hour that keeps us ready. 🚒 🏋️

Have you ever wondered what our firefighters do between emergency calls?

Apart from training, truck maintenance, and community risk reduction programs, every member of CAFR is contractually required to dedicate 1 hour per shift to physical fitness.

While it might look like standard gym workout, it’s actually vital preventative medicine. Medical research shows that the extreme heat, heavy gear (approximately 50lbs), and intense physical exertion of firefighting put an immense strain on the human heart. Sadly, cardiovascular events cause about 45% of all on duty firefighter deaths nationwide.

To fight back against these numbers, your firefighters train like tactical athletes. We build the cardiovascular endurance, core strength and stamina required to rescue a victim, carry a charged hose line, or force open a door at moments notice.

We prepare our bodies during this mandatory hour so that we have the strength, speed, and resilience to help you when you need us the most.

Today, we pause to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Their courage lives on in the freedom we protect every day.

From all of us at Cedar Area Fire and Rescue, we remember and we honor our fallen heroes. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Although the ongoing rain and cool temperatures have led to a slower-than-usual wildfire season so far, we finished April with five fires for the month. Of those, three involved vehicles or large equipment. One of those was able to be put out by bystanders using fire extinguishers - a great lesson in having fire extinguishers nearby for all sorts of activities! Stay safe in all of your outdoors activities this spring!

Building Excellence Through Experience

This past weekend, four of our dedicated members—Lt. Voiles, FF/PM Maus, FF/PM Robydek, and FF/EMT Massaroni—attended the Illinois Fire Service Institute (IFSI) for the "Light and Fight" live-fire training program.

In the fire service, there is no substitute for the real thing. Our team participated in five intense evolutions, each designed to replicate the exact conditions found in a structure fire. Training with real fire, extreme heat, and zero-visibility smoke is essential for maintaining "muscle memory." It allows our firefighters to practice critical decision-making and hose-line advancement under the same physiological stress they encounter during an actual emergency.

By investing time in these realistic environments, these members ensure that their response is second nature when it matters most. We are proud of their commitment to bringing these advanced skills back to the department to better serve our community.

Grilling Season Is Here! 🍔🌭

The weather is finally warming up, and we know everyone is itching to fire up the grill. Before you throw those burgers on, take a look at these 6 essential safety tips to keep your backyard BBQ fun and fire-free:
1: Give it Space
-Keep your grill at least 3 feet away from your home. This includes siding, deck railings, and overhanging eaves. High heat can melt vinyl siding and ignite wood surfaces faster than you think.
2: The "Kid and Pet" Zone
-Establish a 3 feet safety zone around the grill. Keep children and pets away from the cooking area to prevent accidental bumps or burns.
3: Open Before You Ignite
-If you're using a gas grill, always open the lid before lighting it. If the lid is closed, gas can build up inside and cause a dangerous flash fire when you strike the igniter.
4: Never Leave it Lonely
-Stay with your grill! It only takes a second for a flare-up to get out of control. Never walk away while the burners are on or the coals are hot.
5: Keep it Clean
-A clean grill is a safe grill. Regularly remove grease and fat buildup from the trays below and the grates above. Grease is one of the leading causes of grill fires.
6: Safe Coal Disposal
-For charcoal fans: once you're finished, let the coals cool completely. Always place them in a metal can with a lid- never in a plastic trash bin or a cardboard box.

Let's keep the "fire" in the fire pit and out of the house! Stay safe, enjoy the sun, and tag a "Grill Master" who needs this reminder. ☀️🚒

Happy Anniversary to Firefighter/EMT-B Sam Kelly! FF/EMT Kelly joined the department in 2024 as a part time member.

FF/EMT Kelly's passion for the craft is undeniable. If there's a training exercise happening or a new technique to learn, you can bet he's right in the middle of it. He can also be found assisting at the fire academy on his days off.
