Last night was a blast! We had an amazing turnout at our annual Power of the Purse event, a premier fundraiser for Women United! Talented models strutted their stuff down the runway, people got to connect with one another, and funds were raised to support women's healthcare right here in our community.

With this year being the 20th year of Women United, this year's Power of the Purse event was a true celebration of the impact Women United has made in our community and will continue to make on local women and their health.

Since its inception in 2006, Women United, an Impact Network within United Way of East Central Iowa (UWECI), has raised nearly $4 million and helped make over 59,000 health-related encounters possible for local women.

Women United's mission is centered on uniting funds and resources to help women achieve their best health, especially those women in our community who are un- or under-insured. Funds raised by Women United help local partners provide needed health services, such as annual exams, maternal health services, vision care, prescriptions, and much more.

"Women all around us are facing more and more challenges and pressures. This group is working to put real solutions into place to support women. Unfortunately, their health is usually the first thing pushed off their plate. Diagnoses, additional challenges, and access just add to the stress. By doing this work, we are supporting women when they need it the most." -Erica Bergfeld-Reed, Women United Vice Chair

September marks National Disaster Preparedness Month - a chance to prepare yourself, your family, your business, and your community for disaster. While no one can predict the future, each of us can take the steps to prepare for the unknown.

Here's five key steps you can take to ensuring you and your loved ones are prepared when disaster strikes:
1️⃣Identify your support network and key emergency contacts.
2️⃣Get connected.
3️⃣Assess your needs.
4️⃣Safeguard key documents and document valuables.
5️⃣Engage your support network.

United Way of East Central Iowa has a special shoutout for one of our volunteers, Tom Osborne! Tom is one of our amazing Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteers, who helps eligible individuals navigate Medicare healthcare coverage and tax returns.

Better yet, Tom recently received the Governor's Volunteer Award, which honors the dedicated people who volunteer their time and talent to help an agency or organization deliver on its mission. We couldn't agree more that Tom truly is a prime example of what volunteering is all about - giving of your time and talent to make our community a better place.

In an article published by The Monticello Express, Tom had this to say about what volunteering, especially with SHIIP, means to him, "You need someone you can talk to and who you can trust, because the topic is kind of personal...And, when someone walks out of the Volunteer Center and they are in tears because they are relieved because they know what's going on with their Medicare coverage, it's the kind of thing that gives you goosebumps."

Congratulations, Tom! We are so proud of you and are grateful for the impact you help create each and every day as one of our incredible volunteers! 💙

Ensuring our local kids started school this week with all of the supplies to be successful doesn't happen by accident. It happens when partners come together and help one another to transform East Central Iowa and change the story for local kids.

Thank you to these companies for supporting Pack the Bus and helping provide everything from backpacks to glue sticks, pencils and binders, and so much more. Because of your support, over 500 local kids are able to start the school year ready to learn!
