Kennedy High School is one of four high schools in the Cedar Rapids Community School District. Founded in 1967, Kennedy has become one of the top rated high schools in Iowa and in the nation. Kennedy is known for its superb academic program with some of the highest AP, ACT, and Iowa Assessment scores in the district and the state. Kennedy's performing arts programs are the benchmark of success. Ou

r Show Choir, Theatre, Speech, Band, and Orchestra routinely earn high praise for their performances. And our athletic programs are top-notch, with numerous state appearances and championships throughout our history. From the City:

42nd Street NE Closure from Pine View Drive to Wenig Road

Construction Update | 4-11-2026

Work will launch Monday, April 13, on the second stage of the 42nd Street NE reconstruction project.

Last year’s phase repaired roadway from east of Edgewood Rd NE to east of Pine View Dr NE. This year, work runs from east of Pine View Dr NE to west of Wenig Rd NE.

The project will entirely replace the existing 42nd Street NE pavement; replace the existing storm sewer system; replace the existing water main; replace some of the sanitary sewer; add wider bike lanes, and add a pedestrian crossing.

The project is expected to wrap in November.

Traffic Impacts

42nd Street will be closed to through traffic from Pine View Drive to Wenig Road.

A detour using Wenig Rd, Glass Rd and Blue Jay Dr NE will be posted.

The project is staged to avoid being near Cedar Rapids Kennedy High School until school is out for the summer.
Traffic at Twin Pines Golf Course will not be affected.

All Church parking lots will be accessible but prepare to detour.

From working with the master schedule, interviewing candidates for staff positions, running athletic competitions, and working with families to help students be successful, our administrators work incredibly hard to provide the best high school experience for our students! Needless to say, she has her hands full! 🏆

We need to give a shout-out to Mrs. Williamson for the incredible work she has done in taking Kennedy's Jazz One to new heights. To qualifying to the Iowa Jazz Championships for the first time in school history three years ago to finishing 8th last year and 4th this year, along with the incredible festivals they have won, we just have to say Thank You! You are the definition of ! 🎶
