Cedar Rapids Police Lt Michelle Omar has graduated from the 298th session of the FBI National Academy. The graduation took place at the National Academy in Quantico, Virginia, on June 18th, 2026. Omar joins several CRPD Captains and and Chiefs as a graduate from this prestigious course. Nationally, fewer than one percent of officers have the opportunity to attend the program. Omar is the District Lieutenant for the Central District in Cedar Rapids and is a key leader in several Departmental groups.

Internationally known for its academic excellence, the National Academy offers 10 weeks of advanced communication, leadership, and fitness training. Participants must have proven records as professionals within their agencies to attend. On average, these officers have 21 years of law enforcement experience and usually return to their agencies to serve in executive-level positions.

The 298th session consisted of 255 law enforcement officers who graduated today from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. The 298th session of the National Academy consisted of men and women from 46 states and the District of Columbia. The class included members of law enforcement agencies from 26 countries, five military organizations, and four federal civilian organizations.

Cedar Rapids Police Department’s Canine Offier "Riggs" to receive donation of body armor


Cedar Rapids Police Department, IA - Canine Officer "Riggs" will receive a bullet-and-stab-protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. Canine Riggs’ vest was sponsored by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and will be embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of K9 Hobbs, Des Moines, IA - EOW 12/12/23”. Delivery is expected within ten weeks.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,513 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old, actively employed, and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Fireworks stands are up and running. 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿, fireworks are not legal to light off in the City limits until July 3 and 4.
We truly appreciate everyone who followed the rules last year and waited until it was legal to use fireworks. It cut down the number of 911 calls and allowed our officers and firefighters to remain engaged on other public safety duties.

We want you to stay safe this year with fireworks. When you do light them, do so from private property only, not the streets or parks (and please pick up your debris).

Celebrate well. 250 years of freedom deserves a great fireworks show.

June 11 is National Corn Day! (There's a day for everything.)

Corn is so important to our community we have a whole weekend in August to celebrate it at the St Jude Sweet Corn Festival.

Southbound I-380 near Diagonal Dr. is currently experiencing traffic delays and serious congestion following a semi and tractor jackknifing and blocking the left lane. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes until this blockage is cleared.

Summer fun!
Thanks to the crew who showed up for Pickleball with a Cop this morning at Jones Park.
That was a lot of fun.

Cedar Rapids Police arrested four individuals this afternoon following a disturbance in the 2700 and 2800 blocks of 6th St SW.

911 callers reported a multi-person disturbance at 2:39p.m. When officers arrived, they located the individuals, broke up a fight and arrested all four people. They were charged with Disorderly Conduct.
Initial report indicated shots had been fired but that was unfounded. A firearm was located at the scene but there was no evidence located showing it had been fired during this incident.

There is an ongoing investigation and further charges are possible.
