Today, on Memorial Day, my thoughts were with the Marines and Sailor who were killed while conducting entry control checkpoint operations on June 23, 2005 in Fallujah, Iraq.

They were members of a Lioness Team — female U.S. military personnel tasked with communicating with and searching Iraqi women as they passed through checkpoints throughout the city. These assignments were often filled by volunteers who, in addition to their normal duties, stepped forward to carry out dangerous missions in service to others.

Their work, unglamorous, selfless, and seldom recognized, kept other US troops safe by interdicting and stemming the flow of weapons into the area. Furthermore, they helped maintain positive relations between the Iraqi population and US military personnel through the respect they showed for local customs.

Regina Clark’s remembrance below reflects the spirit of service they all answered in the years following the September 11 attacks and the devotion they showed to their fellow service members.

More than 20 years later, they are not forgotten.

They remind me to appreciate the blessings my family has in life, to live each day in honor of those who could not, and remember that freedom is never free.

I’m deeply honored by the trust our community placed in me in this election. This victory belongs to my wife, Laura, our kids, our family and friends, the incredible volunteers, and every resident who showed up to vote.

I’m excited to get to work and do my part to make our city even better—for today’s residents and for generations to come.

The universal complaint I hear in every neighborhood is speeding. I support Jim, Darron, and Shweta because they agree with the need to prioritize safety over speed. We will work to make our roads safe for people of all ages and abilities.
