Structure Fire – July 28, 2026

On Tuesday, July 28, at approximately 4:00 PM, the Cedar Grove Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire on Overlook Road.

Upon arrival, crews were met with smoke and fire showing from the top floor of the residence. Firefighters quickly stretched hose lines, made an aggressive interior attack, opened up walls and ceilings to locate hidden fire, and successfully extinguished the blaze before it could spread further.

Thank you to our mutual aid partners for their rapid response and assistance on scene and protecting the township as we were operating at the fire.

This incident was one of four emergency calls handled by the Cedar Grove Fire Department throughout the day, highlighting the dedication and commitment of our volunteers who stand ready to respond whenever needed.

SUPPORT FOR CAPTAIN TOWER

During the structure fire on May 28, one of our officers, Captain Tower, suffered a knee injury while operating on the fireground.

Captain Tower was the officer on the first-arriving truck company and was conducting search and rescue. While withdrawing from the second floor due to deteriorating interior conditions, he fell on the staircase, sustaining significant injuries to his quadriceps and knee.

Today, Captain Tower underwent surgery as he begins the road to recovery.

For many years, Captain Tower has answered the call without hesitation, putting the safety of others before himself. His dedication, leadership, and commitment to protecting the residents of Cedar Grove have not gone unnoticed. We are grateful for his service and proud to stand beside him as he faces this challenge.

We ask our members, residents, friends, and neighboring departments to keep Captain Tower and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

If you’d like to brighten his recovery, those who know him best know he won’t turn down a good pizza, a hot dog, some chocolate, or a bag of Skittles.

Captain, thank you for your sacrifice and service. The entire Cedar Grove community is behind you. We wish you a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.

At approximately 7:18 PM, the Cedar Grove Fire Department was dispatched for reports of smoke showing from a residence. Upon arrival, crews quickly determined they were operating at a working structure fire.

Firefighters stretched handlines, established a water supply, conducted searches, opened vertical ventilation holes, and performed extensive overhaul operations to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

We would like to thank all of our mutual aid partners who assisted on scene and provided coverage for the Township during the incident.

Today, members of the Cedar Grove Fire Department gathered at our Firefighter Memorial for one of our most meaningful traditions, our annual Memorial Day service honoring the brave men and women who came before us.

Each year, we place flags in remembrance of our brothers who have passed, ensuring their dedication and sacrifice are never forgotten. This morning, we especially honored:

• Franklin Sekulic — Company 2, passed away during the current year
• Ernest Neuschaefer Sr. — Company 1, our department’s only Line of Duty Death in 1953
• The 343 firefighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001

Following the memorial service, members traveled to Cedar Grove Parkway to place a wreath in honor of our department members who served during World War II, remembering Lloyd Smith of Company 1 for his service and sacrifice.

Memorial Day is more than a holiday, it is a time to reflect, remember and honor those who gave so much for their community and country. Their legacy continues to live on through the traditions we carry forward every year.
