It was a great day celebrating the ribbon cutting of The Salvation Army’s newly renovated kitchen!

Donors John and Kaye Englin, head cook Kathy, donor Helen Schumacher, and Captains Karissa and Zach Zumwalt joined together Tuesday to celebrate this exciting addition to the community.

We’re grateful to everyone who helped make this project possible and proud to see continued investment in resources that strengthen our communities and support those in need.

What can one community learn from another? A lot.

Tomorrow, we’re bringing four very different community stories together for “Get Loud About Where You Live” with Kiley Miller.

You’ll hear how communities across our region are:

🌳 Creating connections. Williamsburg is extending a trail to connect more than 200 senior living residents with the broader community.

🏙️ Turning abandoned areas into possibility. Ackley is transforming a vacant section of downtown into a redevelopment opportunity.

🏠 Building more than houses. Mason City is creating affordable workforce housing while giving future trades professionals hands-on experience.

🚣 Reimagining what’s possible. Estherville is turning its river into a community destination with recreation, accessibility, trails, fishing, bridges, and gathering spaces.

These aren’t just construction projects or capital improvements.
They’re examples of what can happen when local people identify an opportunity, create a vision, build partnerships, rally support, and take action.

And that’s exactly why we’re pairing these community spotlights with Kiley Miller’s presentation on storytelling and local pride.

Because a good project can change a community. A good story can help people believe in what’s possible.

Join us September 10 to hear these stories and think about what your own community could be telling, and what might happen if you got a little louder about it.

What if more people knew what was happening in your community?

What if residents talked more proudly about where they live?

What if your community’s biggest champions had the tools to tell its story and get others excited enough to join them?

That’s the conversation we’re having next Thursday during “Get Loud About Where You Live” with Kiley Miller.

Kiley will explore how storytelling and local pride can help communities build momentum, attract investment, inspire volunteerism, and create a stronger sense of belonging.

And then we’ll see what that looks like in real life.

We’ll hear from four communities in our region that saw an opportunity and decided to act:

🌳 Williamsburg is creating a trail connection that will help reconnect more than 200 senior living residents to the broader community.

🏙️ Ackley is turning a long-standing downtown blight issue into an opportunity for future redevelopment.

🏠 Mason City is tackling workforce housing while helping train the next generation of skilled trades workers.

🌊 Estherville is transforming its riverfront into a destination for recreation, tourism, accessibility, and community connection.

These projects are different. Their communities are different. But their stories have a lot in common…they started with people who cared about where they lived.

The The Salvation Army Waterloo Cedar Falls Iowa's newly renovated kitchen is ready to serve the community, and we’re excited to celebrate with them!

Join them for the ribbon cutting Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 11 a.m. at The Salvation Army, 89 Franklin St., Waterloo.

We’re proud to help support this much-needed community project and grateful for the many donors and partners who helped make it a reality!

Applications are now open for the Fall Grant Cycle of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa. Nonprofit organizations and government entities serving Benton, Butler, Fayette, Floyd, Howard, Worth (Jaspers Family Foundation), and Kossuth Counties are invited to apply.

Visit cfneia.org/grants to read the grant guidelines and apply for grants in these counties.

Deadline to apply is October 15, 2026 at 5:00 pm.

The heart of Stop & Serve was the incredible organizations who opened their doors, shared their missions, and invited us into the work they’re doing every day.

From supporting women and girls to strengthening families, serving neighbors, creating opportunities, and building a stronger community, these nonprofits are making an impact in so many different ways.

We’re grateful to the more than a dozen organizations who spent the afternoon with Women for Good, and to the 80 women who showed up ready to learn, lend a hand, and connect with the work happening right here in our community.

What happens when 80 women decide to spend an afternoon giving back?

A whole lot of good.

At Women for Good’s Stop & Serve event, volunteers stepped into the work of more than a dozen local nonprofits by lending their hands, learning their missions, and seeing firsthand the difference these organizations make in our communities.

From hands-on service projects to opportunities to learn, connect, and discover new ways to give, this event was a beautiful reminder that when women come together, the impact ripples far beyond the room.
