Hartman Reserve Nature Center Hartman Reserve is a 340-acre public natural area located in the heart of metropolitan Black Hawk County. Maps can be founds at www.hartmanreserve.org.

Hartman Reserve Nature Center is located here, which houses exhibits, rental spaces, classrooms and outdoor exhibits available to the public for free The Nature Center is open specific hours during the week; however, the grounds are open sunup to sunset every day of the year. 🪶 Happy International Vulture Awareness Day!

Despite their less than stellar reputation, turkey vultures play a crucial role in keeping ecosystems healthy. As nature's cleanup crew, they help stop the spread of disease by rapidly removing rotting animal carcasses, called carrion. Their potent stomach acid breaks down diseases, allowing them to enjoy a meal without getting sick themselves. Hey... someone's gotta do it!

Here at Hartman, we think every day is a good day to love an unloved critter. These incredible animals are a great place to start!

Save the date! Stop by Hartman Reserve Nature Center on Wednesday, September 23rd to shop for native flowers, grasses, shrubs, trees, and soil amendments from Blooming Prairie Nursery.

☀️ Name a more beautiful place to spend a sunny afternoon... we'll wait!

It's been a week since we reopened our pond and it's quickly become one of our favorite spots in these magical woods we call home. We cannot wait to see how it changes throughout the seasons and to observe the wildlife who claim it as their own!

If you are planning a visit to the pond, please be sure to leave it better than you found it. Pick up any excess litter and refrain from moving the rocks (no matter how big or small), as it damages the structural integrity over time.

We can't wait to share more exciting projects with you soon!

💚 Please join us in celebrating our three magnificent interns, Ivy, Ashlyn, and Schlee for their help in making this summer unforgettable.

From day one, we knew this would be an excellent crew! Through a mixture of natural skill and learned confidence, they played a key role in the success of many fan favorite camps, including Wild Kratts, Prehistoric Party, Superhero Camp, Arts Camp, and more.

We are so thankful they chose to spend their summer with us and cannot wait to see what the future holds for them. Remember, you always have a home at Hartman Reserve!

🍄 Be a fun guy and learn about fungi!

Have you ever wondered what makes fungus so fascinating? Join us on Sunday, August 23rd at 2 PM for a lecture-style presentation about the incredible world of fungus. We will discuss the fascinating things we know about them, as well as the mysteries we've yet to understand.

This event is geared towards adults but is open to all ages. It is free of charge, and no pre-registration is required.

Today we are reminiscing on Arts Camp. Last week, campers spent two days exploring various art mediums, including dancing, crafting, and acting. The highlight of camp was designing costumes and performing a play about the nature center to a crowd full of friends and family!
