Acequia Madre de San Antonio Community Ditch Association

Acequia Madre de San Antonio Community Ditch Association AMDSACDA is a political subdivision of the State of New Mexico.

The small East Mountain village of San Antonio de Padua is the location for one of the oldest acequias in the United States, established by native Americans, and expanded and preserved by land grant heirs from the late 1700's to today. The association is located in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, north of the Village of Tijeras, on the Canon de Carnuel Land Grant. The water issues from the perpetua

l springs within the Ojo Grande subdivision and course out of the area across Bernalillo County Open Space Ojito de San Antonio, into, and through, the tiny village of San Antonio.

Although our springwater fed Acequia remains dry we are ever hopeful the waters will return. There is much to do in preparation for that time, and we have begun the efforts to welcome it.
We have removed the plastic canoa from the system. It failed many years ago, and began to dangerously crumble into the arroyo.
We have resumed working with UNM and Bernalillo County for a historically accurate replacement canoa. The effort should complete in 2027.
Pray for water.

The officers and parciantes of the AMDSACDA have withdrawn from operating the "Fiesta Burger" food stand at the San Antonio de Padua annual June fiesta. We sincerely appreciate everyone contributing time, resources, and donations over these decades. The effort preserved our acequia from damage, and loss. The acequia association continues to monitor pressures on the acequia, and accomplish efforts protecting it. Pray for water.

We work with Bernalillo County staff in their efforts caring for the open space through which our acequia courses.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Officers of Acequia Madre de San Antonio Community Ditch Association
Viva San Antonio!

Our deepest sympathies to the Ken Sanchez family, and friends. Ken, most recently a Albuquerque city councilor, served as a Bernalillo County commissioner when our community fought development that threatened destruction of our acequia. He was supportive in our quest, understanding the historical and culture impacts the loss would be for all citizens. His support helped us retain our communities treasure. His passing is a great loss for New Mexico.

Fiestas de San Antonio de Padua coming up June 14. This year marks the 200th anniversary for the Carnue Land Grant, and Acequia Madre de San Antonio. Coincidentally, the exciting helicopter event of twenty-three years ago, when Victoria Hefkin was air-lifted to bring Josef Hefkin into the world, will be celebrated. Just the birthday, the helicopter isn’t scheduled for attendance. 😂

What are the prospects for springs renewal this year? Do we have any experts out there willing to venture their thoughts for us?

News reports tell us we're exiting a period of drought in New Mexico. The last time NM was this wet was before the turn of the century. That is nearly two decades of becoming-very-dry conditions, and returning to not-so-dry. I predict water flowing from our springs within nine months, and maybe within six. Anyone have thoughts to add?
