One of the largest groups that the Cedar City Fire Department delivers their fire prevention & safety message to is the Iron County School District second graders. In the spring of each year, over 900 children and their teachers participate in Life Safety Week.
In addition to safety presentations made by Police, Goldcross EMS, Cedar Communications, BLM and DNR Fire service professionals, the children tour the fire station and visit our life safety house.
The life safety house is a two-story structure, dedicated in September 2008, which has a fully furnished kitchen, living room, bathroom, and two bedrooms. The life safety house activity gives the children a first-hand look at various aspects of safety in the home. One of the highlights of the life safety house is a bedroom that fills with smoke, a sounding smoke alarm, and a window escape jump onto a foam mat. Once clear and at their meeting place, the children are taught by dispatchers what they need to know when calling 9-1-1.
This event would not be possible without the assistance from all the professionals mentioned and our very own dedicated firefighters that provide their safety messages to the children, parents and teachers.
