The Board of Education of the Iron County School District will consider the budget for the 2027 fiscal year during its meeting on June 16. A hearing on the budget will take place at 5 p.m.

The proposed budget does not include a tax increase. The voted and board local levies will remain at the Estimated Certified Tax Rate. The decision to remain below the minimum rate required by the state means a reduction of the state guaranteed amount by $990,113.

Some of the deficit will be made up with use of some projected surplus in the general fund. That one-time money is a result of revenue related to contracts with Education Service Providers. The District will still maintain a fund balance, which is important for emergencies, economic downturns or to help with operating costs of opening a new school.

The updated proposed budget can be reviewed on the district website.

The public can also hear about the budget from Business Administrator Todd Hess, who appeared on the KSUB Morning Show at

As summer rolls in, the Iron County School District is busy planning next year's budget, which includes a welcome 4% increase in state funding and no property tax hike.

While most are enjoying the summer time off, we are gearing up for back to school. Those preparations include a shopping trip for 45 students in need, so they also can return to school with something new. Most are funded by grants and money raised through the Iron County School District Foundation, but we could use the help of the community to ensure this program continues.

If you would like to sponsor a child, donations can be made at https://sfnd.io/backtoschool. We spend about $150 on each child, plus send them home with a backpack filled with school supplies. You can also volunteer to pair up with a child for the shopping experience. Sign up at https://bit.ly/Spreevolunteer

TBT: The imagination of a 1st-grader comes alive in the annual monster project. In 1st grade, students study living things and learn about their habitats. They then take that knowledge and imagine a monster. Along with a drawing, they write what the monster eats, where it lives and what personality it has. Middle school students take the concept and sculpt a monster based on the drawing. The younger students are so excited when they see the monster in 3D.

Recently, 32 teams of four joined the Iron County School District Foundation at the Cedar Ridge Golf Course for a morning tournament. The generous Title Sponsorship of Hughes General Contractors and Legacy Sponsorship of Cedar Band Corp helped make this a successful fundraiser. The money raised pays for teacher grants. In the fall, the Foundation Board will choose 25-35 projects to fund. Thank you to all who made this a successful day!

The recent ultimate field day involved students from across the District. Hosted and funded by Manuele Law, the top two boys and top two girls from third, fourth, and fifth grades at each school competed in the 100-meter dash, 400-meter run, and softball throw. Students who did not qualify, packed the stands to cheer on their classmates. Iron Springs claimed the overall championship and will receive a $500 donation. Three Peaks placed second for $400, while North finished third and will receive $300. Read more in Iron County Today.
