Tarantula season is here! At 8-10 years old, a male desert tarantula (Aphonopelma iodius) is sexually mature. During the autumn mating season, he follows the scent of a female to her web-lined burrow. The male will tap a rhythm on the silken strands. If the female is receptive, she will invite him inside. Mating is dangerous as the female might eat the male to gain much needed nourishment after laying 50-100 eggs in a protective silken cocoon. While females may live for up to 25 years, males die soon after mating.

Despite their “creepy crawly” image, desert tarantulas are very timid and their venom does not affect humans. Only when seriously provoked will they bite or flick irritating hairs from their abdomen in defense.
