..ELEVATED RISK OF WILDFIRE SPREAD THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING...

A combination of dry and breezy conditions this afternoon and
evening will create an elevated risk of wildfire spread,
especially for south central Pennsylvania. Minimum relative
humidity values will range from 20 to 35 percent accompanied by
wind gusts between 20 and 25 mph.

Residents are urged to exercise caution if handling any potential
ignition sources, such as machinery, ci******es, or matches. If
dry grasses and tree litter begin to burn, the fire will have the
potential to spread rapidly.

For more information about wildfire danger and wildfire
prevention and education, please visit the Pennsylvania Department
of Conservation and Natural Resources website at

The next 24 hours are going to be a little weird here in Pennsylvania.

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟭𝟲 ⛈️
It's warm, and we expect to see powerful wind gusts. Be alert for isolated tornadoes and potential flash flooding to pool on some roadways. Think about the safest location to shelter if there is a tornado warning. Never drive into standing water. Turn around, don't drown!

𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝟭𝟳 ❄️
Temperatures will drop by 25 to 40 degrees overnight, bringing powerful wind gusts and — we hate typing this as much as you hate reading it — snow on Tuesday. The northwestern part of the state will see the most snow, but central Pennsylvania and northeastern PA could get some, too.

Spring Wildfire Season Safety

Spring and Fall are Pennsylvania’s most active wildfire seasons. March, April, and May present heightened risk due to dry conditions, low humidity, and increased outdoor activity. In Pennsylvania, 99 percent of wildfires are caused by people.
DCNR encourages anyone starting a fire at home or at a campsite to make sure there are no combustible items within 10 feet of the fire, keep a rake or shovel and water nearby, and ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving the site. Check DCNR’s website https://www.pa.gov/agencies/dcnr/programs-and-services/community-outreach-and-development/wildfire to see if there is an elevated fire risk.

Advice from DCNR’s Bureau of Forestry includes:
• Clear the area around the fire before starting it.
• Keep fires small and never leave them unattended.
• Consider weather and dryness before striking a campfire match.
• Have a nearby water source and rake to extinguish embers.
• Douse the fire thoroughly with water until ashes are cool to the touch.
Residents are also encouraged to create “safe zones” around homes and cabins by removing leaves and debris, cleaning rain gutters, stacking firewood away from structures, and trimming overhanging branches.

In temperatures this cold, salt isn’t effective. A lot of what you’re seeing on the roads is solid ice, not wet pavement. If it looks shiny, it’s icy. Slow down, leave space, and don’t trust how the road looks the next few days.

You may be missing out on property tax relief through the Homestead/Farmstead Exclusion Program. Under the Taxpayer Relief Act, the Commonwealth provides property tax reduction funding to school districts, which is applied through a homestead or farmstead exclusion. Most owner-occupied homes and farms are eligible, but only a primary residence qualifies for the tax reduction.

To receive school property tax relief for tax years beginning July 1 or Jan. 1, applications must be filed by March 1 of the preceding year. Once approved, homeowners do not need to reapply annually. For more information about the program, click here. https://dced.pa.gov/local-government/property-tax-relief-homestead-exclusion/

Applications must be filed through the Columbia County Tax Assessment Office. The office can be reached at 570-389-5642 or [email protected].

Homeowners should verify they are not already enrolled before submitting an application. The program is supported through state gaming funds.
