Today we raise the flag in honor of flag day. Here is a link to the flag code: https://us-flag.net/code/

As a veteran, there's nothing quite as refreshing, or as familiar, as being on a military base at the end of the duty day and watching people and cars stop at the first sound of "retreat" in a show of respect for the flag.

The United States Flag Code establishes advisory rules for display and care of the flag of the United States. It is Section 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code (4 U.S.C. § 1 et seq). This etiquette is as applied within U.S. jurisdiction. In other countries and places, local etiquette applies.

A brief note about Women Veterans Day.

One step at a time.

On June 12, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed the Women's Armed Services Integration Act, allowing women to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Forces. Prior to the act, most women—except nurses—could only serve during times of war.

The legislation was a historic milestone, but it did not grant full equality. Women were barred from serving on aircraft and naval vessels that might engage in combat, and regulations prohibited mothers with dependent children from serving. Female service members who became mothers could be discharged. Many of these restrictions remained in place until the 1970s.

The Women's Armed Services Integration Act came just weeks before Truman signed Executive Order 9981, which desegregated the military. Together, these actions marked important steps toward a more inclusive Armed Forces.

Progress did not happen overnight. But on June 12, 1948, the door opened a little wider.

In preparation for the military action in Normandy, General Dwight Eisenhower drafted a letter to troops who would carry out the mission. It read, in part:

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you…

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely… The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!
