Good afternoon Castroville,
I wanted to share some great news that has been occurring over the last 2 years at the police department.
First- we have remained fully staffed for the last 2 years and I have several officers that were hired shortly after I arrived in 2022 that are still with us today...we are retaining our police officers which has not been the case in years past. This is great news and we have have built a solid team for Castroville. As the region 7 director for the Texas Police Chiefs I network with a lot of chiefs around Texas and most have a hard time finding good police officers and retaining police officers is another challenge!
Second: Grants we have received to date are as follows:
Community Oriented Policing Grant 2023: Partially funded 2 police officer positions to have adequate staffing levels.
Operation Stone Garden- $32,000 in overtime and recently a new police truck valued at $83,000.
Operation Lone Star Grant: $100,000 in overtime and equipment.
Alamo Area Council of Goverment (AACOG): Police vehicle valued at $50,000
FEMA grant for generator: value around $40,000 and we have been approved; however, federal government shut downs have slowed this process.
Operation Stone Garden this year allocated $63,000 for overtime and equipment. Awaiting Federal government to fund.
AACOG 2026: we ranked 6 out of 32 proposals that will be sent to the governor and should fund October 2026 for a new police vehicle in the amount of $83,000.
This credit goes out to Corporal Detective John Sapper writing and obtaining the grants for the City of Castroville. Our fleet of police vehicles has been a shot in the arm that we needed as the fleet has been aging and the maintenance costs were unsustainable. Great Job, Cpl. Detective Sapper!
Please be safe and as always thank you for your support!
