Douglas County Noxious Weed Control

Douglas County Noxious Weed Control Noxious W**d Control Program since 1991. Non native plants have come to the United States, sometimes as hitchhikers in
grain, hay, or mulch.

Sometimes intentionally by well meaning individuals. Unfortunately in most cases their native enemies (insects, fungi, etc) missed
the boat, and these plants don't stay put.

Be on the look out for Hoary cress (Cardaria draba) commonly known as whitetop. This member of the mustard family is now in bloom, and rapidly spreading in Douglas County. It is on the eradication list with the state of Colorado. It is a deep-rooted, creeping perennial and grows up to 2 feet tall.
Herbicides are recommended and the following work well: Es**rt XP at 1oz/acre or .7 grams/2gallons of water/1000 square feet. Always use a wetting agent like Sun Wet at 1pt/acre or .5 teaspoos/ 2 gallons of mix.

We can still do some w**d control into November for fall sprouting w**ds, but must protect the sprayer from freezing at night.

With the unusually warm fall we have had some extra time to spray the noxious w**ds. Many research projects have found that fall and even early winter can be very successful in achieving control of Canada thistle, leafy spurge and the two toadflaxes.
