Today, Commissioners Court considered the proposed budget Change Memo. There were some positive steps, including funding for important flood and road studies and our long-overdue jail overtime study.

But there is still unnecessary spending that could lead to difficult cuts to public works, public safety, and other essential services in the years ahead.

That’s why I voted no. We need to find cost savings now and make responsible decisions for future budgets.

Tomorrow, Commissioners Court will vote on the proposed FY 2026–27 Bexar County Budget. I’ll share more updates following the vote.

We have to be honest about what we can afford.

As I told the San Antonio Express-News, “those programs that my colleagues want to see continued are going to be funded on the credit card, coming out of reserves, and we need to be very clear and mindful of that.”

We need to make the tough decisions now, prioritize core services, and move the County back toward a balanced budget.

Reserves are there for emergencies and to act as a buffer. Not to fund ongoing expenses year after year.

Making tough decisions today is how we protect the County’s financial future and the taxpayers we serve.

Its proposed budget buys Bexar County another year without major tax increases or service cuts. But reserves are shrinking, pandemic-era funding is ending, and property-tax revenue is slowing.

It was great to join the 100 Club of San Antonio for their 9/11 First Responders Coffee this week.

For more than 50 years, the 100 Club has stood behind our law enforcement officers, firefighters, and their families through its support and programs.

As we marked 25 years since September 11, we honored the heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice that day and those who continue to serve our communities today.

Thank you to the 100 Club for all you do to support those who serve.

Twenty-five years later, we remember September 11, 2001.

We honor the nearly 3,000 Americans who lost their lives, the families who lost loved ones, and the first responders who ran toward danger to save others.

We also honor the heroes who answered the call to serve our country in the days, weeks, and months that followed.

And we remain grateful for the courage, strength, and unity that carried our nation through one of its darkest days.

Never forget.

Thank you to the San Antonio Republican Women for having me at today’s luncheon.

I enjoyed sharing some of our wins in the upcoming FY 2026-27 Bexar County budget, including keeping our property tax rate flat, and answering questions from folks in the room.

We also reflected on today’s memorial marking the one-year anniversary of Charlie Kirk’s assassination and the anniversary of 9/11 tomorrow. I gave an update on my recent trip to Washington, D.C., where I advocated for JBSA, our military installations, and opportunities to strengthen Bexar County’s military community.

The Smithson Valley Road Bridge is officially open!

It was great to join Office of Comal County Judge, Kristen H. Hoyt and our Bexar County, Texas - Government Interim Public Works Director David Wegmann this morning to film a video highlighting the opening of the new bridge.

For years, heavy rains made this low-water crossing a hazard and disrupted travel. The new bridge provides a safer, more reliable route for residents and is better equipped to withstand flooding.

This milestone marks the first joint infrastructure project between Bexar and Comal Counties. Thank you to our Bexar County Public Works team, the Comal County, Texas Public Works team, and to everyone who helped bring this important project together. I look forward to building on this partnership through continued collaboration between our communities.

At our recent Commissioners Court meeting, we were proud to present a proclamation recognizing September as Su***de Prevention Month.

In 2024, nearly 49,000 Americans died by su***de, and an estimated 14 million adults seriously considered su***de. In Texas alone, 581 Veterans died by su***de in 2023.

This month is an important reminder to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations about mental health.

Our Pct. 3 Deputy Chief of Staff Laura Garza recently joined the City-County Ad Hoc Committee on Diversion for a tour of key facilities within the Bexar County Jail and diversion system, including the SAPD Central Magistrate (CMAG), the Sobering Center, and the Justice Intake and Assessment Annex (JIAA).

Important conversations like these help us better understand the process and how the system works firsthand. I appreciate everyone who took the time to participate in the tour and share their expertise.
