🙏Watch out for snapping turtles! But not for the reason you might think.

🐢Momma snappers climb out of water to lay their eggs in exposed soil, usually locked in a weird unresponsive “trance.” Guess where there’s about 90 miles of exposed soil by the Genesee River and ponds? Yeah, the Greenway.

🚲People could accidentally hit the adults as they lay. Watch for what looks like a flat gray rock, and steer clear!

😊Fortunately, snappers are super slow, they don’t approach people, and you have to try pretty hard to get bit. They’re no danger to us if left alone.

🪺Laying turtles dig the nest with their hind legs, plop the eggs in, and lightly cover them with soil.

🥾If you’re lucky enough to see a laying snapper, enjoy the front row seat to the show! The mom is safe, she won’t need help going straight back to the water. Just post lots of photos and videos and continue your adventure!

🌻As the weather phases into the spring season, New York State Park trails turn into muddy season!

🌨️Everyone wants to be spending the glorious days outside and though people are ready, our trails have not had time to recover from winter.

👣Most trail systems in NYS Parks in and around the Genesee valley are natural tread, meaning they were carved through the material present.

📝Here are some helpful tips to follow before you begin your hike…

👟Wear snug shoes that don't slip off easily and that you are ok getting dirty/ruined.

🧦Bring an extra pair of shoes, socks and clothes for after the hike!

🚶As a trail steward, it is important to stick to the trail, even if it's really muddy so trails don't continue to widen.

🌲Explore former Onödowá’ga’: (Seneca, Haudenosaunee) reservations near the Genesee Valley Greenway on this annual 6-month adventure series. On each outing, we tell the story of a Seneca town from pre-European contact through the American Revolution, the construction of the Genesee Valley Canal, and the present day.

🧱”The Greenway” is the towpath for America’s steepest canal, replaced by a railroad for the better part of a century. These outings are for a wide range of ability levels. They touch a wide range of topics woven through this American treasure of a trail.

😉Spring comes with new outdoor opportunities and important seasonal updates, like when sections of the trail temporarily close or reopen, and job postings. Get insider info: linktr.ee/GeneseeValleyGreenwayStatePark
