PAWV would like to wish a Happy 251st Birthday to the US Army.

HISTORY OF ARMY BIRTHDAY
The U.S. Army is 251 years old, and counting. That’s a LOT of birthday candles! The annual celebration marks the date in history in 1775 when the Continental Army was formed by the Second Continental Congress and commanded under General George Washington to fight against Britain.

Of course, the U.S. Army wasn’t always the strongest military in the world as it is today. The original ‘army’ was formed from volunteer soldiers, amateur troops, and minutemen, who just had the passion and dedication to defend their land against the British. Actually, military forces existed in the United States before the country even formally existed. Independent colonial armies commanded inexperienced militia.

The Revolutionary War started in America on April 19, 1775, with exchanges of musketry between Massachusetts militiamen and British regulars at Lexington and Concord. As soldiers were alerted in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire, they responded to the alarm, and a state of war was in the air between the British government and the four colonies. Called the Army of Observation, a force of New Englanders surrounded Boston and had the British troops who occupied it under siege, but they needed help. Delegate representatives of all 13 colonies were approached and requested to join them in the battle for American liberty.

When the Continental Army delegates assembled on May 10 in Philadelphia, they learned that British forts at Ticonderoga and Crown Point on Lake Champlain in New York were captured by armed men led by Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen. The situation quickly turned into a crisis, as the delegates realized that the military coup would need to be addressed if the desired reconciliation was to happen. The next step was taken by the Congress, which eventually transformed the small rebellion into a full war for independence. The establishment of the Continental Army resulted in the U.S. Army that we know today.

There was a time when there were never more than 48,000 Continental soldiers. Today, the United States Army boasts over one million soldiers on duty, with an additional 800,000 Reserve- and National Guard members.

The resilience of the U.S. Army and its history is a testimony to how integral the military is in peacekeeping. Gratitude is expressed tremendously on the Army’s Birthday with events and ceremonies.

Fraud alert posted by the VA

The VA put out a fraud alert this week about a new scam called the "Veterans Savings Program." Scammers are sending postcards telling veterans (or their spouses) that they're entitled to "extra VA benefits" or additional payments, things like CHAMPVA, TRICARE, or dental, regardless of your disability rating.

They're also sending social media posts, so I wanted to make a post here to alert everyone.

They usually:

* Claims to be affiliated with the VA
* Creates urgency, telling you to respond within 5 days
* Uses flattery to get you to engage
* Eventually tries to get your SSN or bank info

A few ways to protect yourself:

* Never give personal info to someone who contacts you out of the blue, even if it looks official
* Don't act just because something says you have a deadline
* Don't call the number on the postcard or click any links in it
* If you want to check whether something is real, call the VA directly at 1-800-827-1000
* Be careful with unknown contacts on social media too, this scam is spreading there as well

If you think you've been targeted, you can report it at [VSAFE.gov](http://VSAFE.gov) or call 1-833-388-7233.

Thank you for reading if you got this far. Stay safe out there.

Memorial Day is a sacred day of remembrance honoring the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the United States. It is a time to express profound gratitude for their selfless service and to support the families who bear the quiet weight of their loss.

May we never take our freedom for granted, and always honor the price paid by so many.

Today is Armed Forces Day, a special holiday for people all over the world to come together and thank the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. First conceived by President Harry S. Truman, the holiday was established in 1949. The creation of a single day celebration for all five branches of the United States military made sense due to its recent unification under the Department of Defense. Today, Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of every May.

HISTORY OF ARMED FORCES DAY
The history of the United States Armed Forces spans over two centuries. The United States rapidly evolved from being a new nation fighting for independence against Great Britain between 1775 and 1783, to fighting in the landmark American Civil War from 1861 to 1865, to proving their valor and strength during World War II, and finally emerging as a world superpower towards the end of the 20th century. The U.S. armed forces comprise five branches of the military: the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and the Coast Guard.

The origin of the United States Army dates back to 1775 when the Continental Congress established the Continental Army, Continental Navy, and Continental Marines, commanded and led by General George Washington. This newly assembled military force fought the British during the American Revolutionary War with French soldiers by its side, leading to the Treaty of Paris and its independence. In 1789, the new Constitution delegated the president as the commander in chief of the military, with the authority to create laws, levy taxes, and declare war.

Ever since its formation, the primary responsibility of the Army division of the Armed Forces is to fight battles on land and deploy the military for takeover. The United States Army Corps of Engineers mainly control the rivers of inland America. Following the war against the British Army, the U.S. Army was still relatively small and operating in peacetime. This changed in the 1940s when the Air Force became a completely separate unit outside of the Army Air Forces. In 1947, control of the U.S. Army switched over from the War Department to the Defense Department.

The major wars that the U.S. Army participated in were the Indian Wars of the 1790s, the War of 1812, the American Civil War in 1861, the Spanish-American War of 1898, World Wars I and II in 1917 and 1941 respectively, the Korean War in 1950, and the Vietnam War in 1965. The U.S. military also took part in the Gulf War in 1991 and the war in Afghanistan.

As of 2019, the Armed Forces of America fall under the command of the Department of Defense and the Coast Guard, which is authorized by the Department of Homeland Security.

The President of the United States is the commander in chief and they exercise their authority through the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who supervises combat operations.

The PAWV would like to thank all military spouses today on National Military Spouse Appreciation Day. This is an annual observance that takes place on the Friday preceding Mother’s Day. It shows appreciation for the commitment and sacrifice that the spouses of service members make, together with the rest of the family, while they’re away on the mission to defend the country. The day was initiated to recognize the importance of empowering military spouses and ensuring they have what they need to thrive.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION DAY
National Military Spouse Appreciation Day was first observed in 1984 when President Ronald Reagan recognized the importance of spousal commitment to the readiness and well-being of military members with Proclamation 5184, dated April 17, 1984. Shortly after, in 1999, Congress officially made Military Spouse Appreciation Day part of National Military Appreciation Month before the Department of Defense standardized the date by declaring the Friday before Mother’s Day every year as the day to show appreciation for the sacrifices of military spouses — in other words, National Military Spouse Appreciation Day.

The 2021 celebration was held on May 7 and was the first of such under the democratic administration of Biden and Harris. National Military Spouse Appreciation Day is also sometimes known as Military Spouse Day, and this year’s event highlighted how an initiative of the present government, through the office of the First Lady, has empowered more than 100,000 military spouses with employment and training.

Along with the tremendous strength and patriotism they have, military spouses have been noted to endure job losses, adjustments to new environments, and having to learn new survival skills with the frequent and often unexpected developments that sometimes require them to move halfway across the country or even the world, together with their serviceman spouse.

Happy Polish Flag Day!!
Although May 2 is not a public holiday, it is treated as such by the Poles. After withstanding centuries of internal and external storms, Poland has emerged as one of the most important countries in the European Union. The auspicious day of May 2 celebrates the republic’s past struggles and strengthens the Poles for the challenges they face today.

HISTORY OF POLISH FLAG DAY
May is a month for celebration for the people of Poland, with three consecutive holidays from May 1 to May 3. Sandwiched between the two public holidays is Polish National Flag Day. May 2 is a special day in the history of Poland. It is on May 2, 1945, that the First Polish Army conquered the capital of N**i Germany and placed the colors of Poland on the Berlin Victory Column. The day is also observed to immortalize the resistance against the communist regime of Poland that abolished the unfurling of the Polish flag after May 1 — effectively erasing the proof of Poland’s sovereignty on its Constitution Day.

The Poles celebrate May 2 with patriotic rigor. Various demonstrations across the country are organized and people wave a white and red flag across town. Since the 2010s, the day has largely transformed into a fashionable holiday, with the highest government official to the lowest posted clerk of the entire country wearing the national cockade.

National Polish Flag Day was declared on February 20, 2004, after years of legislation and bureaucratic dealings that included the replacement of the Polish National Flag with the Day of the White Eagle. Poland’s national flag features red and white colors, which are inspired by the Polish coat of arms. The red symbolizes fire and blood, whereas the white epitomizes purity and nobility.

PAWV salutes those that have earned the Silver Star on Silver Star Service Banner Day. The day honors the sacrifices of the U.S. military personnel as well as those awarded with the Silver Star.

HISTORY OF SILVER STAR BANNER DAY
During the early 1800s, “gallantry in action” was awarded with the Citation Star. The Citation Star was replaced with the Silver Star Medal later on. The Silver Star is awarded to those who show distinguished valor in combat. It is the third-highest decoration in the United States Armed Forces.

Silver Star Service Banner Day recognizes the sacrifices of the ill, wounded, and dying service personnel. The day also honors those awarded with the Silver Star Medal as well as their families. The tradition of the service banner with blue stars covered with threads of silver, which represented the wounded service members, began during World War I. However, it went out of use when gold and blue star service banners were adopted by the United States officially between the wars. The color silver symbolizes the gallantry of the service members and blue symbolizes hope. These two colors reinforce the message of Silver Star Service Banner Day.

Although founded in 2004 by the Silver Star Families of America (SSFOA) organization, the day was only made official in 2010. The United States House of Representatives also made May 1 Silver Star Service Banner Day. The main aim of Silver Star Families of America (SSFOA) is to evoke gratitude and respect for the sacrifices made by military veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Forces by having a Silver Star Service Banner on a window and/or a Silver Star Flag. Many agencies and groups have stepped forward with dedicated efforts for assisting the ill, disabled, and wounded war veterans, and recognizing their sacrifices as well as that of their families.
