🚨 Safe City Spotlight 🚨

Welcome to our weekly feature called Safe City Spotlight.

Each week, we’ll be sharing real-world examples of how our Safe City Initiative is helping us keep Casa Grande safe—highlighting recent success stories, proactive enforcement efforts, and how technology is making a difference right here in our community.

This initiative combines tools like license plate reader cameras, real-time video, and drone technology to give our officers better information, faster response capabilities, and increased situational awareness—all while maintaining a strong commitment to transparency and accountability.

This week’s Spotlight

CGPD Detectives were investigating an incident that originated as a medical call regarding a 19-year-old male who fell and struck his head. Unfortunately, the victim eventually passed away from significant injuries to his head. Detectives were able to determine the true cause of the injury to be a fall from a vehicle. The victim was on the hood of a vehicle and fell off when the operator of the vehicle drove away. The operator of the vehicle was aware that the victim had fallen off and did not return to the scene of the incident.

Although Detectives did not initially have any cooperating witnesses and could not speak to the victim, they were able to identify the vehicle involved. A description of the vehicle was entered into our search database, and videos utilizing PTZ and LPR cameras identified the vehicle at the location of the incident when it occurred. The vehicle was later located, once again utilizing PTZ and LPR cameras, and the original driver and another subject were in it. Detectives interviewed the two subjects and, along with a significant amount of related information, were finally able to piece together all of the evidence accumulated to that point. The driver, a 19-year-old female, was arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant. After interviewing her about the original incident, Detectives submitted charges to the County Attorney’s office, including Manslaughter, Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Injury Collision, Failure to Render Aid, Reckless Driving, Aggravated Assault, Endangerment, and Driving Under the Influence to the Slightest Degree.

This investigation demonstrates how Safe City Initiative technology can play a critical role in helping Detectives uncover the truth in complex and evolving cases. Through the coordinated use of PTZ and License Plate Reader (LPR) cameras, investigators were able to identify, track, and ultimately locate the vehicle involved, helping piece together the events that led to a tragic loss of life. Even in cases where witnesses are limited and critical information is initially unknown, these technologies provide investigators with valuable leads and real-time investigative support that can help hold those responsible accountable.

This week’s Spotlight

CGPD responded to a call for service regarding an active domestic disturbance. The caller reported a male suspect struck a female victim with a pole. Although the male fled the scene of the assault, a patrol officer (who is also a certified drone pilot) was able to locate him and follow him with his aerial patrol deployed drone. The officer observed the suspect enter the backyard of a nearby residence. The patrol pilot informed dispatch that he only had a limited amount of battery life to assist with the call. Upon hearing this, RTIC staff deployed the DFR to relieve the patrol pilot. DFR provided overwatch while officers prepared to contact the suspect. During this time, the suspect realized officers were on scene and began to move around the yard. DFR observed him reach into his pocket and remove an item, holding it near his body as officers approached. RTIC staff relayed these observations and the new location of the suspect for officer safety. Patrol and K-9 units entered the yard and safely apprehended the suspect. During the arrest, brass knuckles and illegal narcotics were found in the suspect’s possession.

Charges of Aggravated Assault Domestic Violence (DV), Disorderly Conduct DV, Threats, Theft, Preventing the use of 911, Interfering with Judicial Proceedings, and Possession of Dangerous/Narcotic Drugs were forwarded to the Pinal County Attorney’s Office for review.

This incident highlights the value of integrating trained patrol drone operators with the Casa Grande Police Department’s Real-Time Information Center and Drone as a First Responder (DFR) program. Through seamless communication and coordination between officers in the field and RTIC staff, aerial coverage of the suspect was maintained continuously during a dangerous domestic violence investigation, helping officers safely track, contain, and apprehend the suspect. This technology enhances officer safety, improves situational awareness during rapidly evolving incidents, and helps bring violent offenders into custody as safely and efficiently as possible.

This week’s Spotlight

CGPD received a call for service regarding shoplifting from a local Salvation Army thrift store. The business reported that a male subject entered the store, stole several items, and left the area on a bicycle. The business also reported that the suspect had shoplifted multiple times from the same location in the past. Officers relayed all descriptive information provided by the business to the Real-Time Information Center (RTIC). RTIC was able to verify the suspect’s direction of travel utilizing Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras and deployed Drone as a First Responder (DFR) to the area. DFR located the suspect at a nearby hotel, and RTIC was able to direct responding officers to his specific location. When officers arrived, the suspect tried to flee but was taken into custody without further incident. DFR remained on scene to provide situational oversight to the investigating officers. The 43-year-old local male was still in possession of stolen items from the store. Additionally, the shoplifting suspect had multiple outstanding warrants for his arrest.

While shoplifting may seem like a minor offense to some, repeat theft crimes have a real impact on local businesses, employees, and the overall quality of life within our community. This incident demonstrates how Safe City Initiative technology, combined with coordinated patrol efforts and RTIC support, allows the Casa Grande Police Department to quickly identify, track, and apprehend repeat offenders while helping protect the businesses that serve our community.

🚨 Introducing: Safe City Spotlight 🚨

Beginning this week, the Casa Grande Police Department will be launching a new weekly feature called Safe City Spotlight.

“CGPD received a call for service regarding a theft from a local retail store, Casa Grande Tactical Gun Shop. The business reported that two suspects entered the store, stole a handgun, and left the area in a vehicle. Officers arrived on scene and were given a description of the suspects. Utilizing the information provided by witnesses, officers in our Real-Time Information Center (RTIC) immediately utilized Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras and License Plate Reader (LPR) cameras to identify and track the suspect vehicle's direction as it fled the area. Patrol officers initiated a search for the vehicle and located it, relaying information to the RTIC, who in turn deployed a Drone as a First Responder (DFR) to the area. As the Drone provided situational oversight, officers were able to intercept the vehicle just before it arrived near the registered owner’s residence and conducted a high-risk traffic stop. At the time of the traffic stop, only one of the suspects was still in the vehicle, and he was taken into custody without further incident. This suspect is a 45-year-old local male. The stolen firearm was located in the vehicle and will be returned to the business owner. The second suspect, a 48-year-old local male, was eventually located and arrested.

This incident demonstrates how Safe City Initiative technology, paired with proactive patrol work, is helping keep dangerous stolen fi****ms off our streets before they can be used to victimize members of our community. Every stolen gun recovered is potentially a violent crime prevented, and the Casa Grande Police Department remains committed to aggressively identifying, tracking, and recovering these weapons before they can be used in additional criminal acts.”

“A safer community is built, not just by officers, but by those who choose to stand beside them.”

Recently, we recognized our amazing Casa Grande Police Volunteers! It was an amazing night of recognition and camaraderie. In 2025, our volunteers committed to providing over 17,000 hours of service, which translates into approximately $600,000 of employee time saved by our city. We cannot thank them enough for their commitment to our community.

Behind every strong police department is a team of volunteers who serve without expectation. We thank you. We value you. We appreciate you!

We also recognized our Youth Cadets for their outstanding service!
