We are working on a project for back to school material collections. This isn't the typical school supply type of donation project though.
This time around we are hoping to help families who may need things like backpacks, back to school clothes, hygiene products, bras, under wear, boxers, socks, feminine hygiene AND some extras like make up, hair products, and body sprays.
Growing up in school is hard especially in the middle school, jr high, and high school years. We’ve heard over and over again over the last couple of months through people we work with, friends, and strangers, that back to school clothes and self-care products for their children just aren't in the picture.
The kind of self consciousness due to appearance or income level has been proven to impact school performance, higher education, employment, future substance use and mental health complications, self harm, future partner abuse, and harm to others. This is especially true for those who simply cannot afford these luxuries -like simply being clean- in a required social setting like school.
While we know projects like this won't "fix" the root of the issues, we each have a full understanding of the added layer of this kind of social pressure- and I think we can agree that this is only heightened and more complicated in a middle schooler's, pre-teen's and teen's experience.
So we are asking for your help. If you are willing and able, we would so appreciate if setting up donation bins for your churches, clubs, groups, etc. could be something you consider.
If this is something you are unable to take part in at this time, that is completely understandable and we just appreciate your time and willingness to consider.
We are planning to collect through Labor Day weekend. So it's a fairly short window and we are working quickly, full steam ahead. I look forward to hearing from any of you regarding this passion project of ours. Thanks so much for your time.
