This month, we’re proud to spotlight Mya Shields, a member of our Human Resources team whose positive attitude and strong work ethic help keep daily operations running smoothly. Mya’s day-to-day responsibilities include answering phone calls, assisting visitors, responding to HR emails, scheduling interviews for city positions, and helping transition office records from paper files to a fully digital system. She also assists with a variety of projects and tasks that support the department throughout the day.
Mya recently graduated from Cartersville High School and will attend the University of Georgia this fall. During high school, she stayed actively involved both academically and socially, serving as the Class of 2026 Secretary all four years while participating in organizations such as Principal’s Leadership, Beta Club, National Honor Society, FBLA, SkillsUSA, and more. Through Cartersville High School’s Work-Based Learning Program, Mya was able to gain valuable hands-on experience with the City while still completing her coursework.
Through her role, Mya has already made a meaningful impact while gaining professional experience and learning more about how local government operates behind the scenes. Her willingness to learn, support others, and take on new responsibilities makes her a valued part of the team.
When asked what she loves about working for the City of Cartersville, Mya shared:
“One thing I have really loved about working for the City of Cartersville is the amount of experience it has given me at such a young age. As an 18-year-old, I am very thankful for this opportunity because it has taught me so many valuable lessons that I will carry with me into college and future careers. The people I work with have been incredibly supportive and have taught me so many useful skills, both professionally and personally. This job has also allowed me to meet so many new people and better understand how the city system works behind the scenes. Growing up in Cartersville, attending Cartersville City Schools, and now working for the City has made me even more appreciative of this community. I truly enjoy being able to contribute to a place that has played such a big role in my life, and I’m grateful for all of the opportunities and relationships this experience has given me.”
We are grateful for the enthusiasm, dedication, and positivity that Mya brings to serving the City of Cartersville each day.
