Today, our Science Department participated in professional development focused on strengthening student engagement and creating additional opportunities for students to take an active role in their learning.
Our teachers explored new strategies to:
🗣️ Encourage student-led discussions to provide students a chance to share ideas, explain their thinking, ask questions, and learn from one another.
📚 Strengthen science vocabulary through strategies connecting students background knowledge to new learning while increasing students understanding, through the use of vocabulary strategies and apply important content-specific terms.
✍️ Provide students with more opportunities to write about what they have read, providing a chance to process information, make connections, explain their understanding, and support their thinking with evidence from the text.
💡 Increase opportunities for students to think critically, communicate their ideas, and take ownership of their learning.
We are excited to bring new strategies into our classrooms while continuing to create new learning experiences where students are not only learning science, but also developing the communication, vocabulary, reading, and writing skills they need to be a successful learner.
We are proud of our teachers for continually learning, collaborating, and finding new ways to support our students!
