Have an arts education project ready to bring to your community? Funding may be available. 🎨✨

The Nevada Arts Council Arts Learning Express Grant, Cycle A supports short-term arts education projects that create meaningful, hands-on learning experiences for Nevadans of all ages.

Teaching artists, nonprofit organizations, and public institutions are encouraged to apply.

Whether you’re planning a workshop, class or other short-term arts learning experience, this grant can help bring your idea to life and create opportunities for connection, discovery, and engagement through the arts.

Applications are reviewed first come, first served while funds remain available, so don’t wait. Applications must be submitted at least 30 days before your proposed project date.

Carson City Symphony’s Youth Chorus and Youth Strings After-School Classes Begin September 15 in Carson City

Carson City Symphony's after-school youth chorus and string instrument instruction will begin in September at five locations in Carson City. Tuition is free; donations and Symphony Association memberships are encouraged. These programs are for Carson City area public-, private-, and home-school students, and classes are filled on a first come, first served basis.

Symphony Youth Chorus provides group singing experience for ages four and up. Classes meet on Tuesdays, 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., beginning September 15, at Empire Elementary School. For more information, contact the youth chorus director Nidsa Tarazon, [email protected]. Register at CCSymphony.com.

Symphony Youth Strings provides beginning violin lessons for students grades 2 to 5, a beginning cello program, and ensemble/orchestra experience for string students in all grades. Enrollment is limited to provide maximum individual instruction in a small group setting. The instructors request that strings students do not rent or purchase instruments until after the first class. Some instruments are available for loan. Beginning Violin lessons for elementary school students are held after school on Tuesdays at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive, from 1:45 to 2:45 p.m., beginning on September 15, and on Wednesdays at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, 110 Thompson Street, 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. beginning on September 16. Students may enroll for class at either location.

Beginning Cello lessons are held on Wednesdays at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, 110 Thompson Street (use entrance on King Street), from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m., beginning on September 16.

String Ensembles are for students who have had previous experience on violin, viola, cello, bass, or harp. Classes meet on Thursdays beginning September 17 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Family Church, 1201 N. Saliman Rd. The beginning ensemble (Allegro) meets 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The advanced ensemble, STRAZZ, meets 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

All students will have the opportunity to perform in Symphony Youth Strings and Chorus concerts on December 10, 2026, and April 22, 2027 at the Carson City Community Center.

Carson City Symphony's Youth programs are funded in part by grants from the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency; from Carson City; and by private donations.

Mile High Jazz Band presents "With Flying Colors" Jazz and Poetry
Tuesday, September 8, 2026

The Mile High Jazz Band, singer Jakki Ford (pictured), and six poets present "With Flying Colors,” an evening of big-band jazz and poetry, on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Gina's Good Life Music & Lounge, 507 N. Carson Street, inside the Carson Nugget. Gina's is a smoke-free, climate-controlled venue, and has a well-stocked bar and specialty cocktails. The music is free; requested donation is $10.

"With Flying Colors” features the 17-member band playing swinging songs on the theme of the evening, several featuring vocalist Jakki Ford. Poets will present poems that each express an aspect of the theme, followed by a tune that relates to the poem. Poets are Rita Geil, Teresa Breeden, Wayne Carlson, Elizabeth Jones, Susan Sara Priest, and Timothy Rhodes.

Pianist and bandleader David Bugli said, "Some of our favorite, and your favorite, musicians and poets will be here to entertain you!"

Mile High Jazz Band performances and educational activities are supported in part by private donations and memberships, and by grants from Carson City, from the Nevada Arts Council and National Endowment for the Arts, and from the Music Performance Trust Fund. Notions of Erasure: United by Territory is now on view at Nevada State University in Henderson through Oct. 23.

Featuring works by six 2023 Nevada Arts Council Visual Arts Fellows, Jeffrey Burden, Glynn Cartledge, Gig Depio, Miya Hannan, Brent Holmes, and Bobbie Ann Howell, the exhibition brings together distinct perspectives shaped by Nevada, its history and the experiences of the people who call it home.

The Nevada Arts Council is proud to announce that Shaun Griffin has been reappointed as Nevada Poet Laureate through 2028.

During his first term, Griffin brought poetry, literacy and creative writing opportunities to communities across Nevada while expanding his longstanding work with people who are incarcerated.

His second term will build on that impact, with a goal of bringing poetry education and instruction to all nine Nevada Department of Corrections facilities by 2028.

From schools and libraries to communities and correctional facilities, Griffin continues to champion poetry as a powerful tool for learning, connection, and self-expression.

Through the Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6) study, the Nevada Arts Council partnered with Americans for the Arts to measure the economic impact of arts and culture across Nevada.

The arts strengthen more than our cultural landscape. They help build stronger communities, support local economies and create opportunities for Nevadans.
This data gives us a clearer picture of the role arts and culture play in Nevada and helps demonstrate why continued investment in the arts matters.
