Wondering how you fix the underbelly of a historic building?

Stilts!

Yes, the historic blacksmith shop at Mormon Station State Historic Park is currently about 5 feet off the ground.

About a year ago, the structure was struck by a vehicle, causing significant damage and leaving it in need of stabilization. The building was deemed unsafe for public occupancy, but that doesn’t mean we were going to let this piece of history stay down.

To preserve the historic structure, the entire building had to be carefully lifted off its foundation so crews could repair and stabilize it underneath. Once the foundation work is complete, the building will be lowered back into place and the damaged wall rebuilt to restore the blacksmith shop to its former glory.

Announcing the 5th Grade Adventure Pass Design Winner! 🥳

Congratulations to Northern Nevada student Montserrat and her winning design, Starlit Skies! Her artwork is currently featured on the 2026–2027 Nevada State Parks 5th Grade Adventure Pass.

Montserrat and her family celebrated her achievement with a visit to Sand Harbor State Park, where she received her very own copy of the winning pass and a welcome from Carson Kit Fox.

Think you could design next year’s pass? Nevada fifth graders have the entire school year to explore Nevada’s state parks and turn that inspiration into their own Adventure Pass design.

🔺 ️Park Alert 🔺️

The reservoir is currently at 110,000 acre feet, therefore the Boat Docks on the Silver Springs side of the park have been pulled for the season. The dock at North Shore Marina will remain in the water until approximately 90,000 acre feet.

Shhh 🤫 it’s going to be a surprise…

After 2,500 name suggestions and 3,000 votes for the finalists, your newest Nevada State Park officially has a name!

You won’t hear it from us just yet. It’s sealed tight in preparation for the Governor’s official announcement later this fall. In the meantime, we’ll be getting signs, swag and new park passports ready to go.

🚀 2026 Cosmos in the Desert Event Photos 📸

Our second annual festival welcomed nearly twice as many visitors for twice as many nights under the stars.

We added live music from the Rebekah Chase Band, explored the night sky with astronomers, searched for bats and scorpions with Nevada Department of Wildlife, and more.

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers, especially the dedicated astronomers from the Astronomical Society of Nevada and Western Nevada College.

We heard your feedback, too. Next year, we’ll be reorganizing the event layout to balance telescope access with Lahontan’s incredible dark skies.

See you under the stars in August 2027!

We visited Spring Mountain Ranch State Park to check on the work carried out by the crew from Three Lakes Valley Conservation Camp to protect a valuable Arizona Ash grove.

Arizona Ash is a tree native to the southwestern United States. It tolerates a wide range of soils and has good drought tolerance once it is established. At Spring Mountain Ranch, many of the trees in the grove are older and nearing the end of their lives. Replacement trees were not reaching maturity, as they were browsed by wild burros.

Nevada Division of Forestry and Nevada State Parks collaborated to find solution. With funding from the United States Forest Service, NDF crews installed fencing to keep the wild burros out.

Nevada DCNR Director Vinson Guthreau and California Natural Resources Secretary Wade Crowfoot, joined by representatives from the Nevada Division of State Parks, Nevada Division of State Lands, the California Natural Resources Agency, the California Tahoe Conservancy, and TRPA, toured Van Sickle Bi‑State Park yesterday to discuss upcoming improvements, strengthen park management coordination, and review plans for the Stateline Monument. This successful visit highlighted shared priorities for Phase II improvements and reaffirmed our commitment to continued bi‑state partnership in stewarding this unique and treasured public space.
