Judges often face retaliation from disgruntled individuals, so state law makes it a crime to threaten or intimidate judges. This session I sponsored Assembly Bill 150 to provide the same protections to tribal judges. Yesterday it passed through the Senate and is on its way to the Governor's desk for signing. The bill's passage is an important step in upholding the integrity of the justice system for Nevadans. I appreciate all my colleagues and community members who made this possible!

Much appreciation to the students and staff in our Nevada elementary schools who work hard all year to bring the annual Giant Student Farmers Market Day to the Legislature. A shout out to the community sponsors who help to make it possible. It is the largest student-run farmers market in the nation, and all profits are reinvested into school garden programs!

Nevada Trucking Association Day at the Legislature on May 8 gave legislators, staff, and visitors the chance to put their driving skills to the test in the tractor-trailer truck simulator (me included!). State-of-the-art driving safety features keep our roads safer for everyone!

Each year we gather at the Legislature to honor our fallen law enforcement officers at the Nevada Law Enforcement Officer Memorial ceremony. The 28th annual ceremony, held on the Legislature grounds on May 1, honored all officers that have been killed in the line of duty in Nevada since 1861, Thankfully, this year there were no new names to add. May that continue to be the case for our great state, and may the memory of those who have fallen live on.

Sincere appreciation to the Southern Nevada Building Trades Unions, representing nearly 25,000 construction workers, for hosting the Apprenticeship Showcase at the Nevada Legislature on April 30. Attendees were able to try out their skills and learn more about union apprenticeships. These career programs provide both hands-on and classroom-based training for the development of skilled workers in the construction industry.

Today our office is wearing blue jeans in recognition of International Denim Day! In Italy in 1992, an 18-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by her driving instructor. The driving instructor was convicted and sent to jail but later released on appeal. The Italian court determined that due to the tightness of her jeans it must have been consensual. This became known as the “jeans alibi.” In response, women members of the Italian Parliament launched a protest on the Supreme Court steps all wearing jeans. In 1999 the first Denim Day was held in Los Angeles. The Nevada State Legislature recognizes Denim Day and encourages all legislators and staff to wear denim in solidarity.
