CARSON CITY SHERIFF’S OFFICE IMPLEMENTS NEWEST TECHNOLOGY

After over 3 years of research and development, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office is transitioning to its newest technology platform from Tyler Technologies, modernizing and enhancing citywide emergency and daily service operations. This transition is scheduled to be fully implemented during the early morning hours of June 2, 2026. The project will replace the current electronic Tiburon systems that were purchased over 20 years ago.

Sheriff Furlong said that after relentless and extensive formatting and testing, the implementation is expected to run smoothly. The public should not experience any delays in emergency services or first responder response times during this transition. However, as we implement this newest system, there may be temporary delays in report processing, records requests, permits, and registrations. None of the delays are expected to have any significant impact.

The Sheriff’s Administrative Offices may experience short-term delays in processing paperwork and miscellaneous documents as staff adapts to the new platform. However, the Sheriff noted that he expected these interruptions to be brief and minimal. He said he expects the department to return to normal processing times, with improved efficiency and service, in the coming weeks.

The Tyler Technologies platform was selected after an in-depth analysis of vendors capable of delivering the services Carson City needs. The city elicited the assistance of Mission Critical Partners to coordinate and evaluate numerous vendors who could best serve the needs of public safety entities in this community. Included in the selection process, city user officials visited several agencies across the country to finalize the selection process. During fiscal year 2026, the Carson City Board of Supervisors authorized the upgrade costing over $2 million dollars.

The Sheriff noted that the first step of implementation was performed in April when the Detention Center transitioned its processes. As the jail systems were activated, full crews from Tyler Technology and the Carson City Information Technology Department were present on site to react to any unexpected challenges. While the implementation of the jail records management systems continues to be monitored for accuracy and efficiencies, the overall transition was completed successfully without any setbacks.

The Tyler Technology project has been largely labeled as a Sheriff’s Office program, and the department’s leadership team led the implementation plan. However, the project actually affects nearly every city department in the community. Central to the upgrade is the Public Safety Communications Center's computer-aided dispatch software. The dispatch center serves as a central hub for receiving and dispatching public services, including Fire, Medical, Sheriff, and Public Works. While 18 to 20 percent of the calls received at the center are 911-generated, dispatch employees also manage a high volume of non-emergency calls, which are routed to appropriate departments and agencies throughout Carson City, working alongside the Sheriff’s Office and Fire Department.

Sheriff Ken Furlong complimented the leadership teams of the past and present for the public safety platforms. Getting over 20 years of service from our previous vendor platform is a cost-saving achievement in its own right. Now, with the newest platform being implemented, we look forward to that same efficiency in government purchasing for our future.

Sheriff Furlong noted the tireless efforts by the city’s Information Technology department, the absolute devotion of the Sheriff and Fire Employees, and the full commitment by the Tyler Technology transition teams. The team approach has been the key to this program’s successful implementation. Carson City Undersheriff Jerome Tushbant served in a project management role, bringing the teams together in person and remotely every week to address needs assessment and progress. This management team was likewise committed to keeping the local Board of Supervisors apprised of the developments along the path.

Along with the June 2, 2026, implementation date, we've been working on several technology enhancements that are directly or indirectly connected to the new platform. Shortly after the turn of the new year, the Sheriff’s Office expanded its drone technologies and equipment, streamlined and enhanced real-time crime information capabilities, statistical reports, and analytic tools, and improved external agency coordination. All of the 2026 advancements are designed to provide a return on investment by providing emergency operations information enhancements, public awareness, and proactive community safety upgrades.

We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we work to improve upon the services and efficiencies we provide to the residents of Carson City, our families, businesses, and visitors.

Click it or Ticket

Carson City, NV – The Carson City Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Office of Traffic Safety's "Joining Forces" program and regional law enforcement agencies, is participating in the “Click It or Ticket” high-visibility seat belt enforcement campaign.

One of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make is to buckle up. Seat belts are the best defense against impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers. Being buckled up during a crash helps keep you safe and secure inside your vehicle; the seat belt slows you down and spreads crash forces over the strongest parts of your body.

According the NHTSA, in 2024, there were 9,758 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in traffic crashes. The national seat belt use rate in 2024 was 91.2%, which is good — but it can be better. The other 8.8% still need to be reminded that seat belts save lives.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office will continue to enforce traffic safety laws and educate the public year-round as part of their commitment to reduce accidents and save lives. Whether you're the driver, a passenger, or a pedestrian, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone to make safety on our roadways their top priority.

Please contact Sergeant Olson at [email protected] or 775-283-7887 if you have any questions.

Carson City Sheriff’s Office VIPS Traffic Safety Program: Keeping Our School Zones Safe

Carson City, NV – The Carson City Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is proud to highlight its ongoing VIPS Traffic Safety Program, emphasizing the vital role of the Volunteers in Partnership with the Sheriff (VIPS) program. This initiative focuses on ensuring the safety of our school zones and raising awareness about speed limits in critical areas throughout Carson City.

VIPS Traffic Safety LIDAR Program in Action

CCSO VIPS Patrol Officers, including Nathan Rakestraw is actively engaged in monitoring school zones using state-of-the-art LIDAR technology. Their work involves:

• Speed Monitoring: CCSO VIPS, who observe vehicles exceeding the posted speed limits within school zones, and gathering the essential data.
• Data Processing: This information is then returned to CCSO, where dedicated volunteers process the data and prepare warning letters for review and signature by Sheriff Ken Furlong.
• Community Outreach: The letters are mailed to violators, encouraging voluntary compliance to enhance safety and reduce speeds in school zones without receiving a citation or fine.

Commitment to Pedestrian Safety

The CCSO VIPS program also prioritizes pedestrian and student safety. Volunteers work diligently to:

Educate the Public: Inform students and parents about safe crossing practices at crosswalks near Carson City Schools.

Enhance Visibility: Ensure that crosswalks are well-marked and that drivers remain vigilant for pedestrians utilizing the marked crosswalks.

CCSO VIPS Patrol Officer Nathan Rakestraw says; “For the past year and a half, I have been actively engaged in efforts to control vehicle speeds in active school zones. The campaign began with the acquisition of the latest lidar and camera equipment available to law enforcement. Since then, the primary focus has been to increase public awareness of the heavy pedestrian traffic present around schools during active school zone hours. The emphasis has been to maintain the proper speeds. Over the course of the past year, I have observed not only an overall reduction in vehicle speeds, but also a decrease in the number of vehicles traveling at excessive speeds.”

Mobile Radar Unit Deployment

In addition to the LIDAR efforts, other CCSO VIPS Patrol volunteers are deployed with a mobile radar unit (MRU). This initiative aims to:

Increase Awareness: The radar unit is strategically moved around Carson City to alert motorists about their speed in areas known for traffic issues. Over the past couple months, the CCSO MRU has been staged within the school zones to bring awareness and reminders to those traveling through school zones of the importance to drive at the posted speed limits.

Promote Safe Driving: By reminding drivers to adhere to speed limits, the program seeks to foster a culture of safety on our roads.

2026 CCSO VIPS Patrol Traffic Safety Statistics
So far in 2026, the CCSO VIPS Traffic Safety Program has reported significant engagement in traffic safety initiatives, contributing to a noticeable improvement in compliance and awareness within the Carson City community.

February: 86 School Zone Violations Recorded 69% decrease from 2025
March: 155 School Zone Violations Recorded 54% decrease from 2025
April: 82 School Zone Violations Recorded 50% decrease from 2025

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is committed to making our community safer through proactive measures and community involvement. By leveraging the dedication of our volunteers, we aim to create a safer environment for our children and all citizens.
