When disaster strikes, not everyone experiences them the same way.

For some households, especially older adults or those with medical needs, even a short disruption can create real challenges.

Checking in on a neighbor takes only a few minutes. A quick conversation, a flashlight, or helping charge a phone can make a meaningful difference.

Preparedness is not just about what is in your kit. It is also about who is in your circle.

Pets are family, and when emergencies strike, they depend on us to keep them safe.

Here’s how you can be ready:
πŸŽ’ Build a pet go bag with at least three days of food, water, medications, a leash or carrier, and comfort item to keep them calm.
πŸ“Έ Keep a current photo of your pet with your emergency documents - if you’re separated, it can help reunite you quickly.
🏨 Identify pet-friendly shelters, hotels, and boarding options along your evacuation route
🏷️ Make sure ID tags are current and your pet is microchipped

A little planning now means when it's time to go, everyone goes together. More tips at: https://ow.ly/zHEl50YWkYS

Nightlights are not just for monsters. πŸ‘Ά In a nighttime fire, smoke can make it nearly impossible to see -- having a nightlight in hallways and bedrooms helps everyone in your household navigate to an exit faster.

A few other things that help when every second counts: practice your home fire escape plan, make sure smoke alarms are working on every level of your home, and identify two ways out of every room.

With Nevada's fire season arriving early this year, everyone heading outdoors has a role to play in preventing wildfires.

Here are 5 things to keep in mind:
πŸ”₯ Never leave a campfire unattended
πŸͺ¨ Do not leave coals until they are fully doused and stirred
🚫 Never burn aerosol cans, pressurized containers, glass, or aluminum cans
⛓️ Make sure your trailer chains are not dragging and creating sparks
🌾 Do not park over tall, dry grass, your catalytic converter can ignite it

A little precaution goes a long way. Learn more at livingwithfire.com

Please join us in welcoming Scott, the newest intern on our Technology and Mission Support team.

Scott is working alongside our team and learning the ropes day to day, from supporting operations in the server room to helping run technology in the Emergency Operations Center.

Originally from Piedmont, California, he moved to Reno to attend UNR, where he first learned about the Nevada Office of Emergency Management through a cybersecurity conference. He'll graduate in December with a major in Information Systems and a minor in Business Analytics.

Outside of work, Scott is a member of UNR's club baseball team and the UNR choir, and he enjoys sports, singing, and playing basketball.

Welcome to the team, Scott. We're glad to have you.
